Help mp3 music file problems

I transferred all my mp3 files from my evo 4g to my laptop. All played fine on the computer and the phone. I then transferred the same music files to my evo 3d. For some reason only about half the songs are playing. The other half display "unknown artist" and cause a force close when i click on them. This happens with all of the music players that I've tried. I've also tried to retag the some of the affected files but still no luck Does anybody have an idea as to what to try next?

Update - none of my mp3 files are playing on my 3d now but sill playing on other devices. Anybody have suggestions?

I am about to show my ignorance on the subject so please be patient but are any of your other devices iThingys? From what I understand, if you get songs from iTunes you have to convert them in order to play them on non-iDevices. Another thing may be that you moved them into the wrong place on the sd card. I hope this at least gives you a starting point. I have heard my son talk about the iDevices and other player situation because he has an iPod but I have never dealt with it myself. I know that there are converters out there you can download so a Google search will help if that is the case. Good luck :)

I just read in the Apps for the 3VO thread an app that you can download onto your phone that will convert your iTunes called double Twist. The user said it is great for those making the transition from the iPhone. If this is your issue I hope it helps, or maybe it will help someone :)

The only thing that Android won't play from the iTunes Music Store are songs burdened with Fairplay DRM - they haven't sold those in years. If you have AAC encoded tunes, that's an update to mp3 and not an Apple thing - your phone stereo vids use AAC. doubleTwist is just an automatic copy/paste playlist sync.

You're on the right track reading this and wondering what the heck is going on. If you're thinking that the 3vo should be handling this, you're right - everything worked on his Evo.

I'm intrigued that you tied it to storage location.

L8 - I wonder if it's something like that or even a corrupted directory.

You haven't been unplugging your phone from your computer without unmounting/ejecting it first have you?

Seeing your update that it's gotten worse, try doing a repair while your phone is mounted on your PC as a disk drive, let us know.

Haha EarlyMon, I did put in a "grasping at straws " ignorance clause! ;) Some of his music could have been stuff he downloaded from iTunes since only some weren't playing. The poster in the other thread who told about the apps said it converts too. Of course, I posted early this AM and didn't notice he had had an EVO4G before... Duh! I am intrigued now and am curious as to what could be causing this person's issue and thought maybe since his problem got worse to the point where he can't play anything that maybe he started moving things around. I hope someone can help him figure it out so I can learn something new!

Thanks for your input guys. I did plug the phone into my laptop and got a prompt to fix errors, which it did successfully. I've also deleted all the music files from the sd card and reinstalled them with the same result.

The location of the files is intriguing. I bought a san disk 32 gb card and put that in the 3d. There was no music directory on the card obviously, so I made a music directory, mounted the phone as a drive, and put the mp3 files in the music folder i made. Perhaps that is the incorrect location and thus the problems reading the mp3s?

no that is the correct location.
you can put the files in a "photo" folder.. makes no difference what you name the folder so long as the extensions are valid (.mp3, etc)

can you put the files BACK on to the 4G?? just copy and paste the folder back to the 4G and see if they can pay there.

also looking at your song files, do they have the proper .mp3 tag on them? make sure there are no extra spaces, after the extensions.

how many tracks are we talking about?

This is simply awesome :P

But for L8AGIN:

Have you tried using non-stock music players? WinAmp, AudioGalaxy, MixZing, many many others. Those apps couldn't give 2 craps about where your music is. They'll scan your whole SD card.

Also, do you have your stock 8GB SD card? Try with some music on that. It is possible that your new 32 GB card is defective. Possibly even a counterfeit item. Amazon, eBay and Craigslist are filled with counterfeit items.

If nothing else, have the phone reformat the SD card and re attempt all that is mentioned in this thread. If windows detected errors, you should let Android reformat the SD card.

I will back up the card, format, and copy everything back. I edited the tags awhile ago and all the songs played fine on the 4g and on a computer so I'm confident the files are tagged correctly. Just over 700 songs.

I'm also thinking it's a sd card issue. AFAIK it's working well but it'll be good to eliminate that as a potential problem. I've tried multiple music players and they all won't play any of the songs. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Ok, I re formatted the card and checked it for errors. Everything seemed alright but the mp3 files would still not play. I put the sd card from my 4g in my 3d and everything works. I contacted sandisk and they believe the card is "not genuine". So hopefully I can get a refund. In case anybody is interested, one way to tell if you have a genuine sandisk card is to check the rear or the card, there should be nothing printed on the back, all printing should be on the front. In any case, thanks for all your help.

yep a fake card would also explain the errors. its probably much less memory than whats printed on the card which is why some files would work and not others. thank you for the follow up.

Thanks for the update and info! Glad you got it figured out. :)

This is not meant to insult you or anyone else:

But buying anything from eBay or Craigslist is unwise without doing research on the person selling the stuff.

Personally, I only buy stuff from authorized retailers. (Sandisk authorized retailers) Sure, you pay more. But I'll gladly pay more for peace of mind. It usually isn't all that more expensive. But remember the old adage: If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

I've had pretty good luck on ebay. I have been burned recently but thats why i use paypal, so i'm protected. But you're right, buying from an authorized dealer would def reduce the hassles of a fake card.
