Help MP3 player with off screen pause button?

Does anyone know of a way I can pause/resume music using a button such as the power button on top or the volume buttons on the side without having to take the phone out of the holster? The apps I've used require me to touch a button on the screen. I need to pause a bit quicker than unholstering, unlocking and pressing pause.
