I have an android 4...all the colour has somehow gone out of the picture...there is a setting somewhere to correct this but I cannot find it....many thanks...

Try Settings > Developer Options > Advanced > Hardware Accelerated Rendering > SImulate Color Space > And choose Disabled. It probably has Monochromacy checked now.
