Root MT4G root questions

Greetings-

I'm a recent Android convert that is familiar with jailbreaking and unlocking for my previous phones (iPhone 2G and 3G). One of the things I would like to do is root my myTouch 4G, but I still have questions about the advantages of doing so.

First of all, is there a difference between rooting and modifying the rom?

Secondly, I would like to get games such as Dungeon Hunter and other Gameloft offerings, but I don't think they are compatible with my phone. Would rooting the phone change that?

Also, there are some stock applications from T-Mobile that I could do without, but there are others that are pretty helpful. Would rooting or modifying my phone's rom get rid of applications such as the Genius button and being able to link contacts?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be given.

First of all rooting an android is far different from jail breaking, and no I don't know why mt4g doesn't show up on gamelofts page but rooting your phone won't make a difference in that regard.
There is a difference in rooting and flashing a new ROM. You can be rooted but still have all of your stock apps, themes, etc. If all you do is root then you can use apps like titanium backup to remove those unwanted stock apps.
If you're into it flashing ROMs can be an interesting experience. Some, like ice glacier, are just modified versions of the stock ROM. While others, cyanogen, are optimized versions of pure unadulterated android.
If the only reason your asking about this is because you want rip remove some stock apps then get VISIONary and temproot and freeze those apps. If you have other motives then I suggest reading up some before diving into root.
I will say that once this baby is rooted it is by far the most powerful phone on the market right now (until next month of course lol). Once you learn some things you will love your phone even more.

Thanks gohausmachine, I've figured out the issue with Gameloft. Apparently the mytouch4g is called HTC Glacier on their phone selection page. Therefore I should be good to get these games.

I'm going to root the phone most likely since that opens up new funtionality and the ability to backup the phone.

Thanks again.
