Is there multitasking? I just got my thunderbolt and want to know if I should.be closing apps.

How do I close them?

You do not. The android (linux) kernel has very good memory management and garbage collection. You will only waste cpu cycles if you force the OS to reopen the apps that were open but you closed.

Did you come from a blackberry by chance?

My last phone was an LG Dare... this is my first smartphone lol. I have a new (November 2010) iPod touch though. Apps stay open and you double tap the home button to see which ones are running.

OK :) I asked because one of the pains of a BB was the horrid memory management. You had to actually go into each app and close it (or battery pull the whole phone) in order to free up memory. So the whole closing of apps manually is usually a sign someone had the misfortune of dealing with a BB full of open apps.

Anyway, long pressing on the home button brings up 8 last used apps. This is a very useful feature for switching. Note that they may not actually be open. Their behavior when they are not active (on screen) is dependent on the programmer who made them, so they may close when not active.
