Must do things before I start using my new note.

Hi all,

Today i am gonna buy note.

As i have used nokia phones previously so this will be my first android phone.

Can anyone please tell me are there any things i need to do before i start using it. do i need to format it, update it, must have apps etc... pl guys pl help me. thanks.

Also what do u mean by root galaxy note?? I did google search but couldnt find what root note means??

With all your experience with note i can be sure of getting proper guidance. Thanks.
 
Rooting → is a process that allows users of mobile phones and other devices running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's Linux subsystem with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and manufacturers put on some devices.

First of all: rooting the phone. I guess if you don't know what it means then you don't need to worry about it. Generally for 99% of things the phone can do you don't need it. If you want to do something specialised, like installing OpenVPN or deleting vendor supplied apps (bloatware), then you need to travel that road.

For the rest of your question: I have the following extra apps (so far):
Swiftkey tablet (better software keyboard)
CSipSimple (to use my VoIP/SIP account)
MixZing (Music player that allows you to play files from selected directories which is useful since my phone does not search the internal memory when a SD card is inserted)
Skype
KeePassDroid (for encrypting information, logins mostly)
Opera Mobile (better browser imho)
Osmand (reasonable offline mapping tool)
Battery Solo Widget (nice batter meter for the home screen)
WiFi Manager (good for switching between access points if you have more than one)
Some games like angry birds (fotr when I have the time)

I dont think i need to root it, as it is ICS 4.0 is on the way.

What i want to know one last thing is that someone told me that when i put sim card in my new note i need to login with google account and all that... my problem is that I dont have internet connection activated on my sim, can I download whatever i need on laptop and then install it in note via laptop. I used to install apps in my nokia this way only so i never felt the need to activate internet on my sim card
 
Yeah, not everyone needs to root.

Here are a few apps I installed soon after buying the Note:
SwiftKey Tablet (awesome keyboard)
ChromeToPhone (send links straight from the browser to the phone with a single click)
Tasker (can automate almost any task)
No Lock (disables locking of the screen when I need)
EvoMirrror (don't need to use a real mirror anymore)
Screen filter (lets you adjust the screen brightness to _any_ value you want)
Also the PowerAmp free version for music, FBReader for reading ebooks and Perfect Viewer for reading comics.
 
It is true that you cannot setup the market and samsung apps without a sim card in the phone. I don't really understand why though since I mostly install my apps over WiFi without a problem.

My suggestion would be to try it with your data disabled sim and see what happens. You can always borrow one of your friends sim cards to get you registered if yours does not work.

how does the wifi installation works??

Can i ON the wifi in my laptop and galaxy note and then install apps in my galaxy note??

I just want to find out a way of installing applications in my note without activating internet or 3G in my sim card. My laptop has unlimited broadband. any help in this case??
 
It could be that you could make an Ad-Hoc WiFi connection between your laptop and your phone to give the phone access to the internet, but I get the feeling that most people would want to do the reverse. Check in the WiFi settings of your laptop and see if Ad-Hoc is mentioned.

An alternative: Do you have a WiFi access point (router) with access to the internet? If so, then just connect the phone to that and you should be good to go. This is my configuration.

One thing to to before you switch. Use Nokia PC Suite (Not Ovi Suite) to back up all of your contacts and so on to something like outlook.

When you get the Note you can use Kies to retrieve them. You'll keep all address, birthday, email address information and so on.
 
Before use Android phone you need Google account for download new apps on the Android market. You can create a new account using market app. And download apps that you want. Sometime there may be new updates (not sure).
Backup your old phone contacts into CVS file and import them to your phone under the Google account, then you can sync them with the Google contacts.

This tip was very much appreciated, thinks again and thanks all for answering here. Can i transfer my contacts from my previous phone (Nokia N97) to note using Bluetooth??

I have google account (gmail right), but i am not going to activate internet or 3G on my sim card so this method is no for me.

I just moved over from the Nokia E72 to Galaxy Note and i would like to know some simple questions confusing me since last 2months i bought this Note.
1. U said battery lasts for 10hrs and what i found is it lasts for only 3 or max 4hrs even i kill all background applications using NQ Antivirus inbuilt system optimizer.
2. My note is not rooted so advice me if i have to root it for better performance and kill some inbuilt background applications (Yahoo finance, AllShare, AP Mobile news, Buddies now, Crayon Physics, S Memo, FM Radio, Gmail, Google search, Samsung Account, Samsung Apps, SNS AccountLi, SNS AccountTw, Social Hub, Youtube etc) which im not using?
3. What is best way to use it? If you help me bro i will be thankful 2 u for a long....

It may be possible but I am not sure which information would be retained and if you could do them in bulk or not.
