"Must have" apps for the Thunderbolt

Thanks ahoogst! I had previously downloaded the VZE Skype version from the Market and when I tried to run it, assuming it would at least run voice and txt, it said not yet for TB and that it would automatically update when ready. I am new to Android so would you offer some assistance here? Should it now automatically activate? Do I have to download from that link to my computer and then load to my phone (and first uninstall the version I already have)? And, if you know, what are those data patterns like the one shown on the linked download page? Is that a way to scan with the phone's cam to get the app directly to the phone?

Thanks again, I have been waiting for this.

This is a leaked version of the Skype app with video enabled. It isn't the automatic update since officially this version of Skype for the TB hasn't been released yet. Step 1) You need to download the .apk file and put it on your TB. If you use the Dropbox app then all you need to do is put the .apk in your Dropbox folder on your computer and then open the app on your phone to transfer it. Otherwise you may be able to email the app to yourself and open it on your phone. Also you could manually transfer it to your SD card and use ASTRO file manager app to open it (remember the location you put the .apk). 2)Before opening the .apk tap Menu->Setting->Applications and make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked. 3) Open the .apk and confirm that you want to install the app. 4)There ya go, Skype with video chat is on your phone. It's actually named differently ("Skype mobile") vs. the app store version ("Skype") so you could keep both apps on your phone if you wanted, although I just uninstalled the original app.

One I stumbled across the other day, is c:geo . So far, it looks decent. Can search nearby, live maps, etc. I'd almost say it was direct from geocaching.com, the way it looks. Freebie. The weather here is JUST finally turning good, so I'll be looking for other apps to try too.

You have to go into notification settings in Handcent to enable notifications. You can change the notification icon, the ringtone, etc., and if you're in the message of a particular contact, you can set separate notifications for that person.

To disable stock, to to messages -- menu -- settings -- uncheck received notifications.

Delete the icon off your desktop and youll never notice it. If your default action when dealing with SMS' is set to your new app, youll never worry about the stock again. Itll all go through goSMS.

Also to expand on this, goSMS has two widgets that you can use. One is called Medium and is a widget that will list all of your messages. The other one is called Icon and is exactly like the stock messanger widget, it will simply display the icon and have an unread count on it.

You can add it like you would any widget to your screen. :)
 
Swype. Too cool.

Vlingo is pretty sweet. I find the speech function works well. Say "Text Dave Message Where are you" and it comes up! Just hit send. Awesome.

Regular old Google Voice does the same. No need for Vlingo bloat! I think it's relitively new to google, but it works quite well.:cool:

Honestly? Not a clue. It works damn well for me. You know...*cough*...after one day. lol. Ive not seen any issues with it at all though. Its not the desktop version, but whomevers wanting that needs to get a grip. lol. If you read on their forums, there are a lot of people bitching about it. Yet to see what theyre talking about though.

Oh and are there any nice picture editing apps out there? A co-worker was showing me Fat Booth and we were goofing around with that on his iPhone the other day. Also, I have yet to find an Android app that totally blows away any iPhone app. I mean there are some cool apps out there, but nothing I'd say that makes the iTunes App store look like a guy selling oranges out of the trunk of his car in front of a Whole Foods. I did see something called Dildroid that looks humorous, if a little sick and twisted...
 
So instead of creating a new thread I figure I would just post my question here since it is relevant.

Is there an app that locks another one, specific, app so that people cannot open it? Like an app locker of some sort?

Google it. I found a bunch of apps with a simple google of "Android App locker". Am I the only one on here with Google-Fu skillz?


And, another app I found, from the makers of the TV Shows Stream, now they have Movie Stream https://market.android.com/details?id=moviestream.kiio.es Granted it's a pay app, but they're having an introductory special right now.
 
I just got RealSilent which is an app that runs in the background and automatically sets the media volume to silent when the ringer volume is set to silent and/or vibrate. It's hard to believe android doesn't do this already.
