Help Must I Root to get market apps to work?

We got my wife a Nook Color a few months ago. She wants to use some of the apps on her phone on her nook. I tried to just move them over and do an install but no go as you can probably guess. So what do I need to do to get her able to use Market apps on the Nook?

You need to root or install a custom rom like CM7, MIUI, or CM9.

My preference is to replace the stock rom with CM7.
