Help Mute the ring tone

Is there a way to mute the ring tone of an incoming call while I am deciding what to do with the call?

This morning some idiot rang me at 0150h. I was fumbling to mute the tone before it woke up the whole house. But I could not find any option.

In meetings, it is a nuisance if the ringing blares away while I make my way out of the room to take the call.

have you tried to press the volume button...

EDIT: Also I think froyo has a feature to put the phone face down to mute ringing also. No idea whats your Android version. (And I dont have froyo on my galaxy yet)

Tasker can silence the phone for you on various gestures/orientations (I use it to snooze my alarm by flipping the phone over, brilliant).

Yes, just press and hold the volume up or down key for 2-3 seconds. It will mute the call.

Old thread but maybe helpful for someone. On froyo pressing the power button which is used to lock/unlock screen can be pressed to mute the ringtone.

On most Nokia phones, smart or non-smart, the right function key automatically maps to "Silence" when there is an incoming call.

Modern Nokia phones such as the N8 allows you to silence calls and snooze alarms just by flipping the phone face down. I'm surprised the Galaxy S doesn't have this simple function.

Try the app called flip silent. When you face it down, you can choose to set it to silent mode or vibrate mode. There are a few options, it can be depending on when it is ringing or before it rings or even switch speaker phone on and off by shaking it while a call is on going.
