Muting notification and email sounds?

Hi All,

I have been trawling google trying to figure out how to disable notification and email sounds. I would like the little indicators to appear in the notification bar, but would like to avoid the sounds as it is annoying while asleep. Putting the phone on silent is an option, but I would like to hear any phone calls.

Is this possible?

Some workaround that I have tried, but could work are:
1. Record a very short silent sound and use this as the sound.
2. Reduce the volume for notifications to 0

Goto All Apps/settings/sound. Select Volume and in the pop up untick 'Use incoming call volume for notifications'. This then releases another slider named Notifications. Slide this all the way to the left.

And for email. Open the email app and press menu button/more/settings. Select Notification settings and then untick notification sound.
