It depends on where you are. But if you want to force 3G (EVDO), Dial ##DEBUG# In the Stock Dialer, Enter your SPC Code (find it here MEID ESN HEX DEC Converter for Android With MetroPCS SPC Calculator | Random Shit ) Go to 1X/HDR Selection (I think that's what it says, its been awhile) and then click on EVDO Only Mode and Save.
However, you won't be able to receive calls on EVDO Only Mode, but you will remain in 3G Only.

I know this post won't help you but...
I live in NYC and whenever I get 3G its a nightmare. Its as if my data completely breaks. It will show me it is connected but will not show the up and down arrows moving.
I just want to know if I'm alone out there, if I have a faulty phone or something. All in all my phone's data connection seems to only work on 1x, and when it finds 3G it is terrible and doesn't work 80% of the time, and if it does, its slower than my 1x speeds.
If there is a way to disable the 3G radio, somebody please help >_<

Your not alone, lol, it's happening down here in Georgia too.
You can follow the steps on the previous reply, but set it to CDMA Only Mode to operate in 1xRTT. This will stop your phone from going to 3G.
You can also update your PRL (Roaming List) by dialing *228 and then Press 5 when the lady tells you the list of options.
