I know this is slightly off but - if you downgrade or up grade and you do not delete the data from the previous software the phone has the tendency to bootloop. I am not sure that's what happened in this situation.
I'm glad you got it working - factory erase is the first thing I do when it looks like my phone needs attitude adjustment.
This time I'm pretty sure it had to do with letting the battery run down to near zero charge then trying to use it. My youngest has been felling rebellious lately so she lost her phone privileges a couple of weeks ago. The phone was kept in her Mom's drawer. She had to have it for a field trip one day last week and even though her Mom had charged it it went into that boot loop when youngest turned it on. I've seen posts here reporting a similar issue on other Samsung phones so I'm pretty sure that was it. Anyway a factory reset did fix it so all is well with the world. From now on for long term storage I'll be sure to remove the battery once it's fully charged.
