Help My EVO Headache

Liveitloud

Newbie
Let me start out by saying that after reading some of the problems with updating devices I have not done an update on this phone in a year so if that is the problem please let me know.

The last app I put on the phone was call control about a week ago so I don't know if it could be related to the problem either.

Yesterday for no reason the phone shut off and rebooted all on its own 5 times. When I charge my phone it always lasts from when I take it off at 5:00 am until about 7:00 at night. Yesterday and today the battery is in the red at 12:30.

Also, yesterday all of the texts coming in on my phone are showing crazy inaccurate times. I was texting with someone at 9:00 in the morning and their texts were coming back saying 4 something in the afternoon and the texts are all out of order because of the different time stamps. My texts going out are showing the right time though.Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with the phone.

I love this phone but am about ready to see how far I can throw it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well no advice yet so I tried a few things on my own. Did a software update this morning and put handcent on it. Looks like the time stamp thing is cleared up. Also pulled the battery and put it back in.

Now I am having an issue with the display using 92% of the battery on the phone. The animated weather is on the home page and I cannot get rid of it. It is what came standard with the phone. Went into settings and checked show no animations but it did not get rid of the cloud animation. Restarted the phone as well as booted off and back on. Still have animated clouds.

Still don't know if the update will resolve all the issues but I guess it's a start. Gotta say I do like the handcent interface. Seems like a pretty cool texting app and like the customization features.

I love this phone but it is definitely got more technology than I have smarts. :)

Do you have the display set to auto brightness? You can lower battery consumption considerably by turning off auto brightness and turning it down to about 20% brightness.

Thanks for the tip I will check that out. Got the animation to stop finally. Dragged it to the trash and then put it on the home page again. That seemed to fix that issue.

Just took the phone off charge so I'll keep an eye on it today to gauge the battery.

Unchecked auto bright on display, cut down brightness by half and changed time out from 1 minute to 30 seconds. Today I noticed a triangle that I don't recall seeing before so I looked around and saw that it was a roaming signal. When I went to check in was on automatic so I changed it to Sprint. That immediately made all my text messages fail to send so put it back.

Battery is almost dead again and time date stamps are wrong on texts again. I don't know what else to do.Any thoughts?

Go under menu / settings / updates and update your PRL and data Profile. See if that helps. :)

Also if you aren't getting good cell reception, it will crush your battery.

I just did them both. We will see if that helps. Today the phone has shut off twice for no reason and the battery is at half power. The roaming triangle seems to always be on. Is that normal? I don't recall noticing it before all the problems started but I could be wrong. I just don't get it. The phone has worked flawlessly for 6 months and out of the blue it went crazy.

Well after doing the updates my phone is still cutting off and on, the texts are still showing wrong time stamp on incoming messages and the battery was dead by lunch time. Everything on the phone is updated, I am stopping all programs that don't need to run in running services and I have cut down the display to 20%. I even downloaded Onlooker to see if maybe there was something that had infected the phone. I guess at this point I don't know what else to do but I am not enjoying the android experience right now and don't know what else to do to fix it.

You have something strange going on in there, and my normal non-rooted solutions aren't working.

We could try a data reset, but you'll loose all your apps etc. You can backup your sms messages with 2nd party apps like SMS Backup and Restore. Then after the hard reset, you can restore them. You'll have to redownload all your apps, unfortunately. :(

Is a hard reset and a data reset the same thing? If I do this will I lose my contacts and stuff or is it just the apps? I am really at a loss and am totally frustrated with the phone so I am willing to do whatever I need to do to fix it. I don't get why when I send texts the time is right but when someone answers 1 minute later their time says several hours later. If someone could just let me know about the reset and the losses so I know just what to expect. I really appreciate those who have responded. I love my Evo and don't want to have to go buy a different phone, I just don't get why it went crazy for no apparent reason.

If you get sms backup and restore it will backup your texts and it also has an option to save your call logs. For your contacts make sure they are saved under your google account. If they aren't, go under your People app then hit menu / import/export then select export to SD. It'll save all of your contacts to the sd card so you can restore them after you reset.

Yes a hard reset is a data reset. It will make the phone like you just got it out the box. You'll need to enter your gmail info again, etc. Then just import your contacts from your SD card if necessary, redownload smsbackup and restore from the market and restore the backup you made. All you'll really loose are the apps, and you can always just redownload em.

As an alternative, have you given rooting any thoughts? All the issues you are currently experiencing could be fixed easily with root and you can make complete snapshot backups of your entire phone, including apps, call logs, absolutely everything! It's called a nandroid backup, but you have to be rooted to perform one. If you want to read about it, here's a link to the root guide:

Granite1 thanks for the helpful information. I really don't know too much about my phone so I appreciate it. I have thought of rooting but I have a protection plan on the phone and I figured if I root and something is messed up perhaps that voids my plan through Sprint.

Actually I am wondering if I might not aught to just take it in to Sprint and let them do the reset. I figure if they screw it up it's on them. I'll report back on what is going on with the phone. Thanks again for all the advice!

No problem, we're here to help. :)

If your curiosity gets the better of you, just stop in the all things root forum and ask away, lots of good folks just waiting to help you out.

Yes, please if you do take it in, post back with the results and what they do to it. Always good to hear what Sprint is doing because they change things up every so often. Also you you never know, they might give you a 3D. :D

Was not able to get to Sprint yesterday but for the 1st time in 2 weeks the phone held battery power all day and into the evening. I don't get it. The text time stamps are still messed up but the phone did not reboot yesterday.

This morning when I got up I had a gingerbread system update so I downloaded it. Then restarted the phone. Went to check to see if there were any other updates I had missed and after doing a check there was another update to the gingerbread so I am downloading it now.

Don't know if this will fix any of my issues or just add to my list of problems but I will keep an eye on the phone today and see how it goes.

Just finished the update and got a screen that said I am now updated to 4.53.651.1.

That might be your issue with the timestamps, but I'm not really sure though.

I will offer some advice of you are thinking about rooting. Don't accept anymore updates, we can apply everything that an OTA updates manually through recovery. The newest OTA makes it a little more difficult to achieve full root.

Just out of curiosity could you shut the phone down then pull the battery. Put it back in, then press and hold the volume down button then press and hold the power button simultaneously until a white screen with Andy riding a skateboard appears. This is your bootloader, or hboot. Post back with all that you see on this screen. This is very useful if you are planning on rooting, so record it for future reference. And if you do happen to update to the latest OTA, do the same thing and write it down somewhere. Just in case you need it. :)

So, today all the time stamps were where they should be and there were no instances where the phone cut off and rebooted on its own. I am hopefully optimistic but will play some wait and see. Today the battery life was really good and the phone boots up super fast. Don't want to brag out loud yet, but things look back to normal. Will follow up tomorrow.

I guess your radios were updated and that made the difference. Or there was a network error in your area that wasn't reported. Either way, the issue is fixed!! Keep us posted!! :)

Remember if you want to walk on the dark side, root is only a few clicks away. ;):D

I am still struggling with the technology of un-rooted so maybe when I get a bit better with the phone I have I might give it a try. I downloaded launcher pro yesterday and then freaked out that it changed my home screen and uninstalled it. Yes, I am technology challenged haha. Baby steps, baby steps.

Big +1 to what Granite said about rooting:)
When you're ready, just read about it with the links he provided and take it slow. When you get rooted, like I did 2 months ago, it is lots of fun tinkering with your phone. Can make it look and act like never before. And if you got a good backup when something goes wrong, flash back!:)
There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here to help..

Mike I will certainly keep all the information in mind. I think it best right now for me to be able to navigate the technology in front of me and it is still a bit challenging. I have to say the phone has run like a top since I did the updates. Battery life seems better, no reboots and things are much quicker in opening and loading. I just love this phone.
