The back door on HTC phones have been notorious for quality issues. I have the touch diamond and because the back door is all one piece, it creates a very creaky phone.
I still don't understand why HTC continues to do this with the EVO 4G.
Aside from that can you tell me what the screen is made of? I hope its glass and if it is, is it as durable as the iPhone's? I found the iPhone glass screen to be indestructible and is pretty resistant to scratches. I hope the EVO is made of the same material.

Seriously, that was a joke right? I've seen an iPhone screen crack being dropped from waist height onto a carpeted floor.
I can confirm that they are not indestructible. My brother has been using a 3gs with a massive crack in the screen for about 6 months. It's quite sad really.

Don't get me wrong on the back door. It is only noticeably thin when off. Attached to the phone, as a whole, the phone is as solid as any I have seen.
The screen is glass and appears to be of great quality. Battery life is good when using 3G only. If you leave the phone on 4G and are in and out of signal it's not good.
Can you confirm something. I read that when the screen goes off, you have to push the on/off button to get the screen back, but wouldn't just touching the screen or one of the buttons on the bottom also turn the screen back on. On my hero i can get the screen back on by tapping the menu button.

Yes, you must hit the top on/ off button. It takes getting use to cause I also came from a Hero.

lol, i have seen so many students with iphones that have cracked screens and they have to keep using them cause there is no insurance on them. its funny.
I'm coming from an instinct and you have to hit the top on/off button. So it should be smoooooth sailing.

My Brother is super careful and has his iPhone in an Otterbox from day one, Ugly if you ask me but does the trick.

wait, so if the screen goes into the "dim" phase where its not totally off yet, you cant just retouch the screen to "wake it back up"?

Yes. it will wake up when touched in the dim stage. But if it goes black you got to hit the on/ off button.
I think that's what he means. Hmmm Its gonna take some time to get used to that, but heck. I just finished reading that engadget review and I am so excited about this phone (more than I was before).

It's very YMMV. I've dropped my 3GS on the concrete multiple times with just some minor scratches to show for it. A couple of times it even landed screen side down, with no damage at all to the screen itself only the chrome bezel.

Don't mean to dwell on this but is it either good or fine? Assuming you are coming to a conclusion when you have about 3 bars of signal?

I think this is the way it should be, especially if your going to pocket it. Although I think Apple got it right by having a recessed button.

It's good, people sound clear with no static. I can't say it jumps out at me, like "man you sound like you are standing here". It's good on par with most with cell phone.
Comparisons: Clearer than iPhone, louder than a Palm Pre, and about the same as a Hero.

Given that WiMax is sitting in 2.5GHz, the penetration in buildings is going to be pretty poor, unfortunately. And those who might blame HTC for the issues with 4G reception in your area -- don't. I can tell you that if you use the 4G Overdrive or any other WiMax radio, you will likely experience the same shortcomings until coverage is *very* mature.
And given that the WiMax radio chip is a *major* energy hog, I intend to keep my EVO in 3G-only mode almost exclusively, except perhaps when I need to create a WiFi hotspot for buddies on-the-fly.
So yeah, I agree the EVO is a great 3G phone, and 4G is just the occasional icing on the cake.

Exactly!!! This phone is just amazing in all it is. 4G is the extra special desert if I am outside and have clear signal, or need to do something that it would make a difference. The rest of the time, it will stay off
Well, YMMV.
A friend of mine closed his car door on his iPhone, right on the screen. The screen survived and there were no scratches.

If you're in a '4g area' how long does the battery last when the 4g stays on? Sorry to bug about battery life but if I can't get decent life with 4g it hurts the reason to switch in my mind, since I avg about 1.5mbps on 3G right now
