My Excessive Phone Bill

So here it is...

I had a blackberry Curve 8900 and upgraded to a HTC Desire HD last month.

In the 24 month contract I had with my blackberry I never once went over my data usage, and I have used my HTC for the exact same thing as I did on my BB.

To my surprise when I checked my phone bill it was

From Facebook can be a bit of bugger for this with it's constant checking for updates on Newsfeed etc. Have you checked that you have set it for manual synch only when you choose to refresh? Same with google etc.. turn off all autosynchs.

Apparently there is an app called Spareparts that you can set to analyse your data (network) usage to try and narrow down what's using it up.

Also maybe download 3G watchdog to monitor your use going forwards.

The other thing is did you have a larger data plan on your BB?

Hopefully some others will post with ideas too.

You might want to look at an app called 3G Watchdog Pro, it will keep an eye on data usage for you, warning you when you get to a certain limit. It also breaks it down by app, showing you what app uses how much data.

It can't go back and check previous usage, but it's a good idea going forward.

Edit -I too ages to type and it looks like Goreygirl got in there with 3GWP before me.

I'm with Orange on the Dolphin 30 plan. I've just looked on the Orange website to double-check, but it is as I thought - like you, I get an allowance of 500 Mb per month (which I've never exceeded) but, on my plan, the maximum charge for data usage beyond that allowance is

There's also ZDbox.
it has an option to monitor your mobile traffic.
set your billing date, monthly data allowance, alert level (if you need it), and away you go :)

The latest Orange Pay Monthly price guide to all new plans regarding data is:

Type: Anytime Monthly Browsing Bundle (500MB)
Cost:

Explain you got a new phone, that you didn't know how to use it and complain multiple times to multiple managers until someone reduces it to a decent amount. Just explain that they should have told you and quote the rules above etc.

Yep, that worked with my wifes phone the first month she had it.

Instead of 3g watchdog, I used androidstats! Just for the sweet widget! I like to know my allowances as there isn't a my Vodafone app for android!

yeah they're screwing you over totally!

im on vodafone with a 500mb cap and if i go over it they just charge an extra 5 quid for another 500mb which i think isn't too bad and reasonable.

what they're trying to extort out of you is beyond ridiculous...unless you were roaming but you'd have said that

That seems a very high amount, I would use some kind of monitoring app to see what's going on but I have facebook update every 30mins, 3 email accounts, I use google maps, browse the internet and even the odd update from android market. Used 157mb and have 8 days left, I wouldn't think you need to turn auto-sync off, there has to be another reason for all the usage.
Unless you have gone a little crazy with youtube or watching videos on BBC etc then I don't see how anyone could casually use that much data. Try what others have said with you getting a new phone and just getting to grips with it, they should be able to arrange something more acceptable than nearly

My wife went in to an Orange store and changed her phone (to an SGS) and resigned a contract. She has had her bills through (over a 2-3 months) and were quite hihgh (not as bad as yours). They actually contacted her and asked her if she wanted to upgrade... she told them that she had done and that she'd had these high bills... they took care of the problem, going through everything and have arranged to put a credit on her account for the difference.

I know it's frustrating, but they can sort the problem if they want to!!

If Stublake is right and you were still on the Blackberry price plan, I would say Orange are clearly at fault for not moving you to an appropriate data plan when you changed handset. No way should an Android phone be on a contract where exceeding the cap costs you more than a few pennies per MB. Point this out to them, and fight it.
