Root My experience in downgrading to GB ZV6

After being so excited for the ICS update, it hasent lived up to my expectations in smoothness and battery life, then JB came thanks to tdm, awesome features and smooth but battery was bad, so I'm going to go back to the GB days and stay there for awhile and see if it still like it, will post results once I downgrade later tonight

I've thought many times lately about going back to v6 just so I don't get reboots. But I will most likely stick with JB. I'll be watching your thread here though.

Ok here is some of my take from downgrading

1. Multitasking seems much better, downloading apps, music, browsing internet, no glitches or lag, on ics I could feel some lag on GB not any

2. Just overall smoothness seems a lot better, ics seemed to clogged and would feel very stutter like at some times

3. Apps from market seem to download super fast, and my router even isn't an amazing one but it's decent, and they would download in a few seconds and they were about 7 mb on ics it would only do a few hundred kilobytes a second, also wifi seems much stronger from a longer distance

So there are some results and im very pleased with them and will continue to stay on GB will test battery a little longer
And also I'm on playfulgods ROM which is awesome, the plagued one

I liked Brian's holo s

Yeah I'm going to test the big three GB roms, this one, holo, and blitz ROM,
And man do apps open instantly when you tap it, it's super smooth transitions when opening apps

Cool now in looking back at those ROMS, I didn't keep any of my older files. If you find all this works, do you know if we can access all the files again?

I went the Blitz ROM and went to try to DL the zip to stop the OTA update and it was MIA.

Sooo I guess....it would be a great idea if we can get those DEV's back on board with this RETRO project to see if they have these and want to dust them off and or add tweaks that they have learned since these ROMS that they may want to just do and update them.

Hey...its a thought. You know, you could almost build this up as and call them RETRO ROMS with a cool fancy artwork boot animation. In Three Flavors.

But I do think it would be cool if the original DEV's took another look at them and maybe....freshened them. Its true, I realize the DEV's on here are super busy and this would just be an annoyance, but, if they could just touch them up blow off the dust or even just say, hey, there is nothing more that can be done to streamline or increase performance etc etc etc.

From what I remember, reboots seemed like more of a problem on gb compared to ics or jb. On custom roms that is.

I would get reboots on the roms but stock was very stable for me. It was just laggy. I flashed back to beta 4 of cm10.1 last night and man is this thing smooth. I thought pacman was smooth but beta 4 blows everything away.

I will say that apps downloaded way way faster on gb...it would literally take a few seconds.

Try beta 4 of cm10 cause that shiiit was gravy. But ya stick gb ran very well for me too.

Was that the tdm 10.1?

Here is some battery, great results
had wifi on 95% of the time

You mean that OTA blocker?

I doubt there's much that can be done to really change a whole lot with these roms tbh. Maybe... MAYBE... you could replace the kernel with an updated one, but you'd likely have to modify a bit of stuff to get it to work right since some of the device paths I believe changed.

The reason GB was so much smoother and better on battery life is that with GB a phone was still intended to be a phone. With ICS/JB, a phone is intended to be more of a mini tablet that makes phone calls. Basically, there's more stuff going on with ICS/JB than there was on GB imo.

IF the source for, I think CM7, was available people could likely roll out GB based CM roms. But even that I'd bet will be a good bit of work to make happen. I doubt too many people would be interested to sink those kinds of man hours into a retro project on an outdated phone for a handful of people.

Hmmm CM7? Nice idea yoinx! Since its summer why not give it a try! Ill think of something

Me?

It's not summer for me. I'm too old for that :p

Even if you find the CM7 sources (shouldn't be too hard I wouldn't think). You'll need to set it up as a new build tree since I don't believe that CM7 was ever built for this device since the source was never released at that point. Now that it's all released at least you have something to work with.

Yup! OTA blocker.

I don't think we should reinvent the wheel here with a custom cm7. I think that becomes more trouble than its worth. I say let's just revisit the ROMS that were at the end of development before jb then ics then off course gb.

Where I think we should go, is a ROM that is as stable and hits as many bases as possible. I know we had one that had what weak wanted and then cm approved of tdm's build and we all jumped that way. Rightly so. We wanted cutting edge. Now, stability and good battery with BT is in. So I think we should pursue those interests.

So how to proceed? Let's see if we can chase the tail of this a bit. Let's put out point, counterpoint on each of the "most stable" roms and evaluate if we even SHOULD go backwards.

For me... I need battery and bluetooth. Which roms had that in good shape?

There was a reason that CM7 never came out for the Spectrum and it wasn't that we didn't have the source code. It's because CM7 doesn't support XHDPI resolution natively. If you're going to build it, you'd have to manually add in XHDPI support for our 720p screen.

I know this is a thread about GB but I just wanted to heap some more praise on how awesome beta 4 is. When I think of jelly bean buttery smoothness, beta 4 meets that standard. Battery life is pretty good as well. I don't know if bluetooth works and I don't care either since I don't use bluetooth :]

I hereby declare by decree of the sovereign authority granted to me by me that beta 4 pwns all. From this day forward all other roms are hereby ordered to bow at beta 4's feet and give proper worship and respect to your ruler...beta 4 :D

LOL IMUcarmen you crack me up!

OK so there is a vote for 10.1b4

Makes sense. I just figured it was related to the source since I thought that's usually why a lot devices got sick with stock based roms.
