Root My first brick! ( fine, it wasn't actually bricked ;-p )

On the subject of unbricking a hard bricked HTC EVO V 4G ... mine freezes at the same part of the boot up welcome screen every time. Once this happens the only way I can find to re-start it is to pull the battery.

It happened when I was attempting to flash the stock RUU (using 4EXT) after using MidnightROM for several months. If it's plugged into the USB, the charge light *does* come on solid red.

I tried a method I read about, which involves removing battery, SD card, and then holding down both volume keys and then replacing the battery, and waiting for a blinking green charge light, I couldn't get that to work. Maybe I just didn't wait with the volume keys held down long enough, it's hard to do with cover off.

I'm hoping there's still other tricks to try. I've never encountered this problem, and help will be very much appreciated. :)

Can you access the recovery? If so, I think you could just flash a new rom and you'd be good to go :o

are you S-off?

No, the startup never gets that far.

The long story of what happens:

Power On
Red charging light goes on solid for a few seconds and then goes out
the bright green on white HTC screen comes on and the phone vibrates
Changes to a dimmer screen (HTC quietly brilliant logo stuff)
Virgin mobile animated splash screen comes on next
It always freezes up at the same spot during the VM splash screen, every time

Yes, it is S-OFF

I'm not finding a lot in the way of solutions for this, except for a couple of programs that require you be running Linux (which I am not).

Well, have you tried accessing recovery through the fastboot menu( I think that's what it's called anyways) instead of from the actual rom? Like, you pull the battery, put it back in, hold the power+down button, and scroll down to recovery?

Alright, I'm surprised as can be, but Recovery actually worked this time, I've got HBOOT 1.57 on my screen right now.

I tried this before more than once and it didn't work.

I'm a little bit spooked about screwing it up further, what would you do at this point?

And thanks man!

I was trying to get back to the Stock ROM because I was having a problem (that VM won't help with) with web pages diverting directly to the Virgin Mobile website (even though my account is current on their end).

I don't want to start celebrating too soon but it looks like I've got a successful flash of the latest unsenseable ROM and my phone isn't bricked after all. Great news, I almost had bought another phone.

Don't mean to be a jerk but technically it isn't a brick if the phone is still responsive in some ways.

Glad you have your phone problem resolved.

If you still have issues with Virgin, just download and install one of the stock roms. After that you can just nandroid between your custom and stock roms. :p

Yeah, if you get into a different rom, try maybe trying out different hboots and roms. JB roms are the best IMO :D

P.S. If you just recently bought your Evo V, and it seems broken, you can call virgin mobile and they'll send you a replacement at no charge. You get a year of free warranty. And if you do ever get a replacement, no need to worry about your broken phone being rooted or not when you send it back, they won't care!

Have a muffin.

The advice to keep a stock ROM around is very good. I use Negman's deodexed and rooted stock ROM as a daily driver. It is easier to customize than the Odexed stock rom. You will probably need to flash Superuser to get it working the first time.

definitely thought they would want to wiggle out of any responsibility they can like most companies.

I got Negalite Blu-ROM installed just fine.

I do still have a pretty big problem though.

My wi-fi adapter doesn't seem to work at all anymore. The "scan" and "add network" options are greyed out in the Wi-Fi Settings area, "Advanced" does open but none of the settings change the fact that Wi-Fi doesn't connect nor does it scan (regardless of whether I have Mobile Network or 4G turned on or off) or list any of the several Wi-Fi signals that I should be seeing at my home.

Which ones are JB ROMs?

Yes, I'd say it is. I've been looking around for a reliable one.

Negalite had a great installer, it has a choice of three launchers, and the theme is good and dark, which I like. It runs fast, too. Not surprised they made a good stock ROM too. Does he keep it current?

I haven't, I was waiting for troubleshooting ideas, maybe news about known issues.

ron scubadiver ... will that stock ROM flash alright with 4EXT? Do I need to flash the ARM or x86 version of Superuser?

Welp I answered some of my own questions, it's ARM version, by the way. My Wi-Fi is working fine running under stock ROM.

Nega keeps his rom current. Especially if you update it via SVN.

Wifi broken is usually kernel related. Did u wipe all but sd card before flash? If u are not s-off u need to manually flash the kernel for it to load properly

Can you recommend an SVN?

I did do the proper partition wipe. I could have sworn I was S-OFF, but HBOOT 1.57 only shows UNLOCKED at the top now. I've been using 4EXT for all the flashing.

Question, which do you flash first when you flash the kernel manually, the ROM or the kernel?
