my gear 2

ocnbrze

DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!
hey guys,
so my og samsung galaxy gear's base charger just failed to charge my watch. luckily i have best buys geek squad protection and was able to up grade to a gear 2 which should be in tomorrow.

really excited to get it.

i am getting the rose/brown color.

just curious as to what y'all think is the difference between the og vs the gear2?

i guess i will post what i think after i get it.

anybody know about rooting it? i know it is not android, but can you unlock it at least? thoughts?

I've got this in Rose Gold & love it, even though I only have partial compatibility, as I don't have a SAMSUNG handset.

One thing I can't remember is if the OG GALAXY GEAR allowed for control over apps such as GOOGLE PLAY MUSIC/RHAPSODY /etc...

No go w/GEAR 2,at least with non-Samsung phones. However, you can load up to 4GB on the native music player on the watch.

I/R BLASTER works surprisingly well, as does the camera.

The GEAR 2 is definitely a step up from the 1st effort, if for no other reason than the improved watch band, which can be replaced with any standard 22mm watchband.
I found a stainless steel one that closely matches the Rose Gold/brown on the watch, looks real nice.

Congrats on getting the new GEAR2.
KUDOS to BEST BUY for taking care of you w/the trade-in/trade-up. Got a similar deal a couple years ago w/a replacement phone, too bad they don't carry T-Mobile phones anymore.

well i had to use my geek squad protection, but they agreed to give me the newest version so i'm happy.

initially i had best buy match the og gear with what amazon was selling it for (i think $279 vs $299) and they agreed to give me an even exchange.....so yes i'm happy with how BB treated me.

i bought another round of geek squad protection and might "do that again" if and when there is a gear 3.....LOL

Looking forward to your review. :thumb:

ok so here are some thoughts.

the gear 2 has waaaaaaay better battery life. i can easily get 3-4 days without having to charge it....of course i power it off when i get home for work.

the watchstyler is now compatible with the gear 2.

i like the ui much better and i think the s-voice is much more improved. i can now text and drive much easier.....LOL

also the watch seems to fit better then the old one.....what is cool is that now you can change band to anyone that you like.

Yessir, the band is 22mm,changed mine out to match the rose gold:

22mm Stainless Steel Watch Band Strap Double Lock Flip Bracelet Straight End | eBay

Not this exact seller, but, the model is the same.
The rose gold is almost a perfect match in color, only close scrutiny will detect any difference.

From 1st glance, looks like LG's watch is similar in band size, might have to give it a look,or,at SAMSUNG's next effort,to be announced this week, their incarnation of ANDROID WEAR.

i just got a Gear 2 and the UI is exactly the same! Fitness apps don't work properly with my Note 3--downloaded Fitness with Gear and it's apparently not compatible with KitKat and simply crashes after failing to sync three times in a row. darn.

i haven't noticed that much different about it. S-Voice is still pared down and only supports texting and receiving calls and asking about the weather--asking it to open watch apps is a no go. Unfortunately it is no more help while driving or walking/running than the OG Gear, as you cannot trigger it by voice like the Live or Wear, and still need to find the shortcut to S-Voice, or replace the nifty weather clock with the shortcut clock.

Was really hoping Samsung saw the error in their ways with the charging dock from the OG gear and finally got MicroUSB support--but nope. while smaller it's still a charging dock which is proprietary and if it dies, your watch will die with it--Best Buy doesn't sell the dock standalone.

Same camera MP, added remote sensor, Tizen which does a great job imitating the 4.2.2 JB on the original, nicer look, but software is still the same. background patterns ala S5 is the only noticeable change. AMOLED often gets brightness complaints but unlike many who claim it's too dim, the default is as i describe BRIGHTER than the SUN!. for more eye-pleasing brightness dim it to level 2. maintains excellent outdoor brightness and less harmful to the OLED and battery.
