My ics experience - splendid!!!

maniwmg

Lurker
I had been using SGN with GB 2.3.6 v for last 1 month and recently updated ICS 4.0 this Sunday.

Experience with ICS is splendid when compared to GB...

1) My new SG Note never lags with the ICS update and the responsiveness is too good when compared to GB. While using GB, I had to frequently shutdown and restart in order to reduce the lag or improve the speed.

2) Battery life is amazing and during standby, literally it does not dry at all.

3) With 3G, SGN with GB used to get hot quite a number of times and with ICS I haven't felt the heat so far...:)

Overall, I recommend SGN users to simply go ahead with ICS updation....

Well done, glad you like it. I love my note but it's now soooo slow and laggy - I had mine 6 weeks and upgraded on Sunday as well, to ICS

So yes, mine is now worst since the update:

1. Lag - swiping between home screens alone can lag and take a bit for the icons to appear

2. Sometimes crashes, and get an error message: App store has stopped" or words to that effect

Suggestions?

Are you using the System Power Saving option from the status display (top right next to screen rotation or in Settings? This does make scrolling less responsive and smooth.

My note was ok on gingerbread
Since ics update its like having a new phone
I know lots of people on here having battery issues
There is lots u can do on ics as regards getting better battery life
If you go settings applications you can stop all the apps you dont need from running
I have disabled polaris and samsung apps as well as many others
You can also go settings data and go down the list of apps you having running and disable them from running in the background they then on work on wifi or if you sync them yourself
basically just get to know your phone
Read all the helpful tips people post
i so love my note on ics.

I just dont get it. I have my note on GB and works pretty fine for me, but i want to try ICS. There is so many mix emotions abault it...
For some Gnote users, is the best thing that ever happened to them, but for others, it just sucks...
Can you tell me if the ICS version that you have is the OTA/KIES update or is an odin ROM...? Specially those that your are not pleased with ICS...Because here in Argentina dont have yet the OTA/KIES update available...

No I didn't. Coz i have heard that its bricks the phone.. i definately dont want to brick my note

The brick issue will not effect you if you have never flashed any roms/kernels to your phone other than official ones through Kies or OTA. Also best if your phone is not rooted.
But as long as this is the case and you have the official firmware update, you will have no problems.

I'm getting on very well with ICS and I have kept everything stock and updated using a PC and Kies.

Likewise, except I'm using a MacBookPro. Totally standard (unrooted) phone.

I think all the talk of factory resets bricking the phone has to be for devices that have been rooted. The bottom line is if your phone is acting up after the ICS update do a factory reset. If it bricks the phone you've done nothing wrong and it'll be covered by the warranty.

EDIT
Just read R4nd0mJ0k3r's post above (I hadn't read it when I posted) and I'm in total agreement.

This would be great news indeed if it was a fact. Now, I have absolutely no reason to doubt you, but you have given me no information to allow me to trust you either. Where did you read about these assurances? Even better, are you an Android kernel developer who has verified that the update will never harm an unrooted stock phone?

I don't want to sound aggressive (because I assure you that I am not). I just want to be absolutely sure before I risk my second hand Note as it it may be tricky to get it repaired free of charge. I guess there will be others in my situation who want assurance and would be delighted to get confirmation of your claim.

Again, I am no troll, just keen to get facts.

Eric Ritchie.

Galaxy Notes are all under a year old, so they are all still covered by the manufacturer's warranty. If you bought a second hand one, did you not obtain the original owner's proof of purchase documentation? If not, why? If not, was that a risk worth taking?

Anyway, if you do brick your Note, I can't see how Samsung will be able to tell if it was rooted or not. I would expect that if the unit is physically in good shape, then they will simply replace it.

I bought my note brand new off a mate, no proof of purchase etc, reset it, no problems at all. Just do it. You'll be fine if you haven't rooted.

Well firstly let me say I have updated mine and 4 friends notes to ICS. Mine has been factory reset 2 times since the update and I FR'd each of my friends that I did after updating, no issues so far. Also, from research on various forums, I have not come across a single account of someone who had never molded their note in any unofficial way being hit by this bug while on official ICS firmware.

Also if you do a but of research, you'll find that the bricking bug was discovered BEFORE the official ICS update started to roll out (and on unofficial ROMs/kernels), so ask yourself, would a gigantic and multi national corporation like Samsung, continue to roll out updates across millions of notes worldwide KNOWING about this issue? That would potentially lead to a MOUNTAIN of notes being returned for repair under warranty at great cost to Samsung? I very much doubt it!

And finally let me add that it doesn't matter how you aquired your note. The device has been out for less than its available warranty period which means ALL current notes are warranted, all Samsung needs to verify this is your phones IMEI, no receipt of purchase should be necessary. I have had many second hand purchased phones repaired with no receipt, because the phone had not been out for as long as the warranty period.

My note is my baby. I love it. I would not have risked mine without being sure. But this is just my advice, I can only make recommendations, but I have responded to many posts in these forums were people have been having issues with ICS saying 'do a factory reset' and everyone who has done it has reported back that their phone now runs like a dream.

For an example of this.

i have flashed and did a full wipe on my note after flashing each 4 ics releases (lpy germany, lpy poland, lpf taiwan and the chainfire leak full repack) and yet my note is alive. also in each ics i have flashed the cf root kernel as i am rooted. currently i'm on lq2 uk/ireland with lr1 modem and i'm gonna stay with it.

I am a little confused after reading this thread. If I use the official ICS upgrade and root it, I can not factory reset my phone?

Actually, I have done quite a bit of research on the XDA developers forum and it is true that nobody has confirmed that the official Note ICS firmware has the problem, but nobody has explicitly excluded the possibility either. What I also found out was that the problem lies in the eMMC chip itself (part of the phone), or at least certain versions of it. Version 0x19 is known to be bad and 0x25 and above known to be good with versions in between being suspect (I have 0x1A). See here if you want to check your version number.

I would assume that Samsung are taking the chance that of the small percentage of phones using the 0x19 chipset, only a percentage will brick, making the replacement with the bug fixed chipset not too expensive.

Yes, this occurred to me too, but I would prefer not to be without my Note for a month while I send it off for repair. Gingerbread works just fine for me and apparently ICS does not bring much (I need) to the table.

Ok, I don't have all the facts myself due to the fact that I don't have the time to dig them up. This is why I was hoping that you had received definitive confirmation that the official release was safe. Since even the effected phone/firmware combinations can be reset or reflashed many times before the problem appears, your above evidence is not rock solid. There is also this report of someone bricking their Note with an ICS update (although they do not say that it was the official update, so this is not evidence either).

Ok, I will continue to wait and stay with Gingerbread.

It will most likely work just fine if you use an official update, but there are no guarantees (that I can find). As mentioned above, if you use an official update and the phone bricks then you can (usually) get it repaired under warranty.

I would love to tell you more, but I am currently working this out myself.

Eric Ritchie.
