My Issues as a 2 Month EVO V User

no, its stock... I've never experimented with rooting before because all my other Android phones have worked perfectly... until this one lol

It may seem like a lot of work, but if you want to fix the issues with your phone you need to:

Root it:

Video on how to root:
how to root htc evo v - YouTube

Unlock the bootloader (S-off):
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/558583-s-off-juopunutbear-s-off-beta-release.html

And finally flash your phone to an Evo 3D:
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...ng-turning-your-phone-into-evo-3d-thread.html

If you follow all the steps in those threads in the order I listed them, you will have a perfectly working phone with everything better than you have experienced on it so far.

Thanks for the advice, if I'm still having the same issues when I receive my replacement device from Virgin I'll try this.

Quick question: does anyone have experience with the Galaxy Nexus & T-Mobile? One option that I'm looking at (if I still have issues with my replacement phone) is buying the unlocked Galaxy Nexus direct from Google and using T-Mobile's $30/month pre-paid plan.... that way I can still save a lot of money on my monthly phone bill and hopefully have a perfectly working device... (although I'd still have to figure out what to do with my Evo V since I'm outside of my 30 day return period). Any advice would be appreciated! I'm open to the idea of rooting, but to be completely honest I would only do that as a last resort... I feel that when you pay $300 for a phone, it should work perfectly out of the box!

The Nexus is a nice device, just make sure that you have good coverage, 2 problems with the T- Mobile service, first is the 100 minutes, but there are ways around that. The second is that after your 4g data is used you drop down to 2G / Edge speed for the remainder of the month. As for your last comment, I have never owned a single phone that has worked perfectly, except for feature phones. You've obviously never owned the Triumph. ;-)

I had an EVO V and returned it as I refuse to jump through hoops to make a $300 phone work. I now have the Galaxy Nexus on the $30 T-Mobile plan. Works perfect, I have zero complaints about this phone, it's easily the best one I've had. I always keep an extra $10 in my account in case I need more minutes, $10 will get you another 100. I'm on my phone all the time and I've not even came close to using 3gb out of the 5. Seriously, 5gb is a lot of data for a phone, especially if you have wifi at home.

lol nope never had the Triumph, before I had this phone I had the original EVO on Sprint so I guess I was spoiled. But you are right

wow I almost wish you hadn't posted this... I'm extremely tempted to do the switch to galaxy nexus/t-mobile now... the only thing holding me back is that I'm not able to return my EVO V anymore :(

Could you tell me what city you live in? I'm just curious because I have no idea how t-mobile is in Los Angeles... none of my friends have it.

by the way I COMPLETELY agree that you shouldn't have to do anything extra to make a $300 phone function properly.... thats kinda why I'm against rooting

and I now read you are from Louisville so I guess you won't be able to advise me on t-mobile service in LA... still wondering about it since my last experience with GSM in LA wasn't exactly fun

GSM...ATT or T-Mobile? Yeah, here I get excellent coverage with T-Mobile..hopefully someone in LA can chime in.

I had AT&T about 3-4 years ago now... dropped them because my calls would get dropped all the time.... im just wondering about T-Mobile because everything I read online claims AT&T is better than T-Mobile, so it makes me think I'll have the same issues (or worse) with them that I had with AT&T

i would highly suggest finding someone that has tmobile before you make the switch.i know you say none of your friends have them but since you work in a high rise their has to be people their with t mobile.im sure people will say t mobile is great and all but i had them for 8 months and in my area they are the worst.in case you are wondering i only had them that long because it was my only option for pre paid 4g at the time.

im assuming that you were happy with sprint so boost is another option.they just got the s2 2 days ago.

i agree with you that a phone should work out of the box and out of the 6 smartphones i had this is the only 1 that doesnt.the only other phone i had any problems with was the triumph and that was just gps and signal strength.

Rooting a phone is rarely done because the phone isn't functioning correctly. It just gives you much more control over every aspect of your device.

yeah I've considered Boost because I was very happy with Sprint... my only concern is that, after this experience with Virgin, I'm wondering if all the networks that run off Sprint aren't as good as Sprint...

I got Virgin thinking I was safe because I was happy with my Sprint service, and Virgin uses Sprint... but ever since I got Virgin its almost like I'm on a completely different network... since Boost also uses Sprint's network, I'm worried I might have the same issues I'm having on Virgin

I understand what the main reason for rooting a phone is... however, most people are suggesting I root my phone to fix the issues I'm having... so that's why I said that

i only glanced over your initial post so i missed the part about you having problems with 4g and 3g.its kinda safe to assume you would also have them with boost.

yeah thats what I'm thinking too.... well I guess I will have to try and find people with t-mobile and ask how the service is... unless when I get my replacement phone in a few days everything is magically ok, which i doubt will happen.

just sucks because I will have to pay for the galaxy nexus and won't be able to return my EVO V since I'm out of the 30 day period RadioShack gives..:(

The most irritating thing about this is that I thought I was being smart with my money... paying half as much as I was with Sprint for the same service... and now its causing me way more headaches.. and potentially more money, if i have to switch networks again...

Ive yet to take my V into downtown. I stay in the San Gabriel Valley area and while inside my house i have the same problem. miss calls and texts. but the moment i go out into the street i get 2-3 bars and ANYWHERE else ive been in the week or so I've had the phone I've gotten 4-5 and full wimax coverage.

problem is, i work from home. and i lost at least 3 jobs this week from not getting a customers texts until the next day or later when I'm somewhere else.

I'm getting slightly better coverage at home after LeslieAnns EVO 3D radio mods, but I already got good coverage everywhere else ive been so I'm not seeing a whole lot of improvement there.

have you tried doing those mods? they REALLY aren't as difficult as they look. loads of people are saying it helps the phone grab signal better.

I had a Triumph for the last 8 months or so and I was in downtown a lot and it got great signal, I only lost GPS on ground level trying to find the next pub, never lost 3G data though.

It's not that I think the mods would be difficult to do... it's just that I don't feel I should have to do them to get my phone to do basic functions like call, text, email, etc. If there is something wrong with the radio setup, Virgin should provide a fix.

You mentioned that you have more problems in your house than other places... what is weird for me, is that I actually have more issues when I'm downtown than when I'm at home (although it still has issues at home too, just not as much)

As I mentioned though, I'm getting a replacement phone in the mail from Virgin. If I still have the same issues with the replacement, I will probably try the mods.

But honestly, right now I'm kinda leaning more towards dropping virgin all together, buying the unlocked galaxy nexus, and getting t-mobile no contract service... since you're in LA too do you have any opinions on t-mobile? I don't know anyone that has it

I haven't seen the resource shortage error since I did the update yesterday, but it hasn't helped my fluctuating signal at all. And it still bounces into 1X sometimes.

I had tmobile since like 2005 or so with the Sidekick line of phones. all the way up to late 2010ish i think where I moved to VM with the optimus V. been with VM since and its MUCH better service than tmobile, but i wasnt comparing android to android. i was on the Sidekick phones..

as far as quality of service, if you pay more you USUALLY get more. but the phone matters too. if the phone has a badly designed antenna, you cannot blame the carrier.

just like how the EVO V has a badly designed software package for the antenna, so flashing over the EVO 3D radio fixes it. doesnt mean the phone or network is bad. the software was
