So yeah, I was once an OV owner of two years, and I recently sacrificed my 25$ plan in favor of a better and faster smartphone, and in this case the Optimus Elite. I have spent almost a month with my new OE which I bought for $119.99 at RadioShack.
Let's get down to the bad stuff:
* Although actual sound quality seems better on the OE than the OV, and you can get louder sound from your headphones than you did on the OV (you really don't need it to be any louder though), I do have a problem with sound processing while the phone's processor is under load. Sound may get distorted or just cut off a bit if you sometimes start an app, or if an app is doing something intensive. This is something that I've never experienced on the OV. I haven't tried using the stock media player, I've been using poweramp because of all the great features. Maybe someone can confirm or dismiss this problem if it's app bound, or cpu bound as I'm thinking it is.
* You have to get a protective shell for this smartphone! It may not really be a "bad" thing, and you would probably buy a case anyway, but this is probably the slipperiest cell phone I've ever owned, and you really don't want to drop this phone, it's not nearly as rugged as the old OV.
Note: As far as shells go, you got to get a TPU shell, I've recently discovered these on eBay and they are awesome, forget about the silicone ones that are dust prone, or the cheap two piece shells which can scratch your phone if dust slips in. It's a hassle to take off a TPU shell at first, like when you want to take out the SD card, but it becomes easier later on while still retaining it's shape.
* The screen has a low pixel density for it's size at 165ppi. This is probably the only gripe I have for what really is a great smartphone. The pixels are just there, and you can see them, it's something I never noticed or even thought about when I had my OV. Jagged edges while rendering 3D images are all too common.
Now the good stuff:
* The Optimus Elite is simply a fantastic smartphone for $119.99, which seems to be the common price these days. I think that it's at the sweet spot in Virgin's smartphone lineup.
* The 512 MB RAM, and partitioned 4096 MB ROM seem adequate, I mean, I do think it's great for what the OE is capable of.
* If it's true that the Optimus Elite is packing a 1024mhz processor instead of the 800mhz it's advertised as having than that is just too awesome and another great incentive to get this phone.
The OE is the phone you want if you're looking at Virgin's lineup with price and performance in mind. I consider the HTC One V to be Virgin's best overall smartphone, but I don't think it's really worth the extra $100 over the Optimus Elite. I know that the HTC EVO V 4G is there too, but I would never shell out more than $200 dollars on a prepaid smartphone, hence that's why I think the OE is at the sweet spot, while I consider the One V a viable option if you really want all the extras.
I could write a ton more, but just ask away, I've really put the OE through its paces!!!!
As far as rooting goes, it's all still far from perfect I think, I personally like the whole NFC idea, so that's another reason why I haven't rooted the phone or dug in deeper. Then again it's a hassle finding places to spend my Google Wallet prepaid card besides my local 7 eleven and Home Depot.
