My non nexus rant

chrlswltrs

Extreme Android User
I will never again own a non nexus device as long as android is on top!!!

When I bought the nexus s it took months before some apps were updated (about 7 months for xfinity which stands out and several phone calls to clueless reps that didn't even know that their software was outdated) but at least I had had current software.

Now ICS has been out for months and I have the best hardware available, but the software is crap... I root and rom, but why is it that people working for free can update phones faster with better software than these companies making millions off people buying their phones????

I have a feeling that Android is going to start going down hill because manufacturers are screwing it up. New phones are still being released with outdated software... That is completely unacceptable!!!!!

Windows is looking pretty good. Apple has almost caught up to android. Everything is changing very quickly and android is falling behind unless you have a nexus phone...

Example:
Current software 10/11: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history#v4.x_Ice_Cream_Sandwich

Phone 5 months later released with obsolete software: http://techland.time.com/2012/01/30...note-price-and-release-date-calls-it-a-phone/

Because the companies add some stuff to their phones that they have to edit? For example, Samsung's TouchWiz 4 had hardware acceleration on Gingerbread. But ICS added this. I would assume that it would conflict with ICS since ICS already has HW acceleration built in. So they need to edit.

To be honest, I don't care if the phone is outdated in software. As long as it works, doesn't freeze or whatever, and I can use it.

I like the customization offered from stock android better so as long as it continues to work, I'm staying with android, be it Eclair or Ice Cream Sandwich.

^ I concur. Haha.

Ps. (speaking quietly - I'll never leave Android for Apple)

1. Production lead times are usually at least 6 months.

2. Manufacturers and carriers have to give tech support. Waiting a while to release the latest versions of Android on devices gives more time for testing, bug fixes and for developers to update their apps for compatibilty. That = major reduction in tech support load and + number of happy cistomers.

3. Existing stock is easier to sell.
