ok my parents have 4 dumb phones on a grandfathered alltel 2000 minute family plan without data or text. my mom wants to upgrade her dumb phone to a smart phone but is wondering about the cost... how much would it be for her to upgrade and add data and text (to her line only) roughly?

If they have to use the new share everything plans its going to get expensive..

Honestly, call Verizon.

even with only wanting to put data and text on one line? or does she have to put it on all lines? i remember when i was under there plan we were able to just add texting to my phone only....

Call. They apparently have a deal going for those who are still under the Alltel plans as in the near future those plans are going bye bye and the holders will have to convert to a Verizon plan if they are still using Alltel equipment.

For one line? Share Everything for one line with 2 GB of data is $100/mo. Add three basic phones and it's $190/mo. for four lines. While I can't speak for the other three lines on your plan, I can't think of a good reason to enter a new two year agreement with a dumb phone.

I'm guessing that if you've got an Alltel grandfathered plan you're currently month-to-month, if you don't have a contract it's definitely worth looking prepaid, especially for the three dumb lines, where the upfront cost is peanuts since those phones are so inexpensive. Pick up a cheap phone and a cheap plan and they're set. For your mother, it's still worth looking into, something like Straight Talk could be good, but the initial cost of a phone will be greater since you'd be buying one outright instead of getting a phone with an initial discount from Verizon.

Calling Verizon is definitely good advice, see what they can offer you coming from Alltel. If you're not on contract, you may want to mention that you've seen good deals from other providers, see if they're willing to offer something. Your mileage may vary.

ok i found that they pay about $180 a month for 4 dumb phones with 2000 shared minutes........... i see the share everything plan with 2gb of data is around $190.... so i think thats what im gonna try to get them to do... i think it would be more expensive to just add data on one line....

next question: now this might be stupid and im pretty sure i know the answer. on the website the galaxy nexus is $99 with a 2 year after a internet discount. is there anyway that a store would be able/willing to honor this price vs the $149 with a 2 year (store price). my logic is that if she gets the best phone she can she wont have to worry about the lag. she wont spend more than $100 tho. any good recommendations of phones for her?

The store won't honor the online price but why not just order online?

because its easier to get it in the store. they really don't care about technology but my mom NEEDS a new phone so we finally convinced her to switch over. if its gonna be too much of a hassle she said it wasn't worth it for her...

If they are willing to go to a third party retailer, Best Buy had the Nexus for free in their ad...
