My Play has arrived!

Either they are small phone games/apps or you are doing something non standard.

Unlocked and rooted, using titanium backup to move those big ass gameloft games to sd, I have massive phone games, the gameloft games would have taken up 150 meg on their own, hexage games would have been 38,
i havent moved accross real football, bruce lee, star battalion and crash bandicoot, those take up 45 meg, not sure how to move those ones as they are bult into the rom. so yes, pretty big apps and games installed!!

Blame my lack of retorts on DeadlyD. I think I was starting to hurt his feelings and when he mentioned he saved his dog who fell through ice, it broke me :(

D was an N-Gage owner like me, so is a kindred spirit :)

“The installed version of Madden does not come close to the PSP version in terms of graphics, depth, or gameplay. However, I think the Play is "good enough" for my mobile gaming itch,”
Because there are no games made for it yet. These are simple phone games ported for the most part. Spiderman or PSP level or close to it.

I need an all in one and lurked at the Play since it "should" have been released, before Sony game division pulled the rug out from under SE and the game division released the PSP Go (bleh).

Had this released when should have, it would have rocked harder. None the less, folks should enjoy the device as long as they understand some app management may be required- unless tip calcs and hangman games are your thing ;)

I tested the Play and compared to other devices. The strong suit on the Play is the gamepad and though a HEAVY strong suit, the storage and display dimness weighed it down, compared to the Droid X2.

-Same price
-Better radio reception (phone, data and wifi)
-Display is far better
-Seven times the locked app space, plus 5gb internal space
-Touch sensitivity is better
-Though no sweet gamepad, the nav buttons are hardware, so no capacitive buttons to hit by accident when using a Vpad for emulators. Playing DonPachi and DoDonPachi (two great shooters) were AMAZING in portrait mode, the contols worked fine and were out of the way. Bullet hell shooters are a good test for touch response on a display.
-Larger display for movies (and room for Vpad)
-Though a larger display, the footprint of the Play and DX2 are about the same for one hand operation for calls & texts.
-On the N64 and PSX emulators, far more games play smooth on the Tegra 2 (no comparison).
-Just as easy to root and Netflix works
-Flash sites and content perform better than the 8255/8655 chipsets
-Mirror mode works great in 1080p and so does bluetooth controllers
-Solid build and Gorilla Glass.

Though gaming is huge for me, the other features from a total cost standpoint did not favor the Play compared to the DX2. I still want one, but as a Pandora style game system.

added: Please try out Metal Slug, since rocks on the Play (not so much on the DX2).

The Droid X2 is not impressive at all hardware wise.

It is the weakest phone I think on Verizon personally...even with tegra 2

I'd give an Incredible 2 over that phone.

But 2 more days till i can get a play...YAY!

and i love that movie(it was Toy story 1 or 2 i think?
You are correct - Toy Story 2. And I was going to second rushmore's motion, but I see you already decided to keep it, so....good!

rushmore, I don't know why but I'm starting to feel like the Play has spoiled me as far as new phones & features go. What I mean is that if it wasn't for the controls, I would have no real reason to spend +$200 on a new phone when all they are is slightly faster or slightly bigger. I have lots of other things that I could spend that money on: 3 full retail PS3 games, save it for the NGP, buy an Xbox 360, etc. Unlike the move from my slow and full Eris, I wasn't limited or unhappy with my Fascinate. It was fast enough that I didn't feel like I was constantly waiting on it. It was bright enough that I wasn't envious of other screens. I had used barely half of the available 2gb onboard storage. The only motivation I had was the attempt at approximating a PSP experience on a converged phone/gaming device. Like Ncaissie, I am a gamer, and I wasn't happy with the tower defense and physics puzzle touchscreen games - I played them because there were times I had nothing else, but I wanted something more. No pure touchscreen phone feature could measure up to the game-changing (pun intended) addition of real button controls. So, unless something better comes along in that specific regard, I think I'm going to be in the Play camp for quite a while...

Play is a good device, so no debate there.

carmen,

Besides the lack of LTE, reviewers and myself agree that the DX2 is a great device and not the weakest, but everybody has their own perspective.

In a "few" months, I will start trolling eBay for a used Play and make it a "Pandora 2" :)

If a Play 2 comes out later this year fixing the stuff I have cried about and adds a dual core- WOW

I would prefer a Play 2 over a PSP2, since the best off all worlds (not just both).

Agreed! I hate having multiple devices, but unless the graphics and gameplay quality of the games increase to at least PSP levels, I think I'm still going to have a PSP2. I just don't think that is going to happen, because games that deep costs lots of money and developers can't afford to sink that much into a game that will only run properly on however many Plays are sold. Developers can do that for a DS or PSP game because they know there are tens of millions of those identical devices out there that their game is guaranteed to run on. The only phone platform to have that luxury is Apple - they could take serious chunk of the DS/PSP market if they came out with a standard set of gaming buttons. If Sony was smart they would license their button tech for peanuts just to get HTC, Samsung and Motorola to build "Playstation-compatible" Android devices. Does anyone see THAT happening?? :p

Not really. The iphone is not powerful enough to run those kinds of games. It can barely run Infinity blade and the play games are better than that game. It runs nice on my Ipad 2 but not my iphone 3GS. The iphone games are not in the same league as the PSP. They have games of the same name but they are dumbed down versions. The Play is closer to the PSP than the iphone will ever be. I have a DS lite, PSP, iphone 3GS, iPod Touch, iPad 2, 4 Xbox Ones and 3 PS3’s. I had for PS3’s but one died. Oh, and a wii and a Gaming PC with a 1GB video card i7 CPU, 9 gigs of ram and 3 terabytes of HDD. I take my gaming seriously.

Ditto :)

""Playstation-compatible" Android devices"

Playstation compatible is not the same as Playstation Certified.
Certified means Sony approved.

I thought *I* had a lot of gaming consoles... I *only* have a PS3, PSP, and Wii. I have a netbook with Ion2 that lets me play a few semi-current PC games but not many.

Are you sure the iPhone can't run better games? It has a lot of horsepower compared to the 333mhz PSP - remember, it is running on 2004 hardware. It should have more memory, CPU and GPU power - although it does have more pixels to push, due to the higher resolution screen. I thought it was just a matter of not having actual buttons, so developers have to spend more resources implementing some funky touch interface instead. If Apple came out with buttons and tools to build games for a standardized Apple Gaming platform, I think you would see games at or beyond the PSP depth and quality... Then again, I could be waaaay off... ;)

Maybe I just haven't seen any. But I believe it has a lot to do with video processor as well as RAM and the fact that the Iphone has the OS running in the background taking up resources. And the PSP leaves the OS to run the game then returns to the OS. I just have not seen a game on the iphone look as good as games like God Of War Ghost of Sparta. The X play also supports cell shading which is in the Ipad 2 but not the iphone.
I also have the X Play of course LOL.

Most psp-iphone games get gimped and you get raped price wise if you take the price of old psp games this year. Just look at ridge racer for the iphone 4

I just received mine. LOVE it so far. Just a couple things...

Does anyone else's volume button (and lock button, for that matter) seem a bit...mushy? I feel a click when I click the volume up or down, but the button just seems to feel kind of...off. Maybe it's just me. I was just making sure it wasn't just my phone model.

And also, where are the other PSOne games? Are they available yet in the US? I searched for Syphon Filter in the market, but couldn't find it.

Sorry if I'm asking n00b questions, but this is my first smartphone. Thanks.

Everything I've read indicates the PS1 game selection is disturbingly small right now. Keep in mind that the playstation store and many other services are still down, as Sony is still recovering from a minor (;)) security breach. I'm hoping that once they get everything buttoned down, we'll see a selection comparable or equal to that in PSN's store.

Open the pocket app and select th magnifying glass.
I have the option to buy:
Cool Boarders 2
MediEvil < I have this one and it's good.
Rally Cross
Syphon Filter
Wild Arms

I agree it isn't great. It doesn't have the same feel as the bottom buttons or the gaming buttons, so part of it could just be that it feels bad by comparison. Part of it for me is getting used to the positioning - I'm usually hitting the wrong direction first. Maybe that will get better as I get used to it.
