Help my screen isnt responding after unlocking

I've had my samsung s4 for about 8 months with a screen protector on and the other day it just randomly stopped working. the lock screen works and i can swipe to unlock it but once i get to the home screen the phones screen just stops responding all together.
this happened for about 9 hours and then it started working again for only 5 minutes, then returned to the touchscreen not responding. i've
cleared the cache and nothing has happened the only thing i can think of is that the digitiser is broken.

When you cleared cache, did you do that in recovery (that works better).

Also try rebooting in safe mode.

Pulling out the battery for at least one minute, also a good idea.

Well first off I need to ask if you are rooted and or rommed? If its a custom rom then far and wide is the problem. If your un-rooted or just running stock then it seems to be a kernel issue. Try to reboot to recovery (power off and hold volume up + Home + power until boot logo shows and let go.) From here you can wipe cache and even perform a factory reset (full wipe). If wiping cache doesn't work try factory wipe. If all else fails take it back.
