Help My Text Messages Disappeared?

So I searched other HTC forums on this site and apparently this isn't new but, my Thunderbolt deleted all of my SMS and MMS last night? Nothing important lost, but without using some ridiculous backup app...is there a way to prevent this? I don't have auto delete selected or anything like that. I went through the options in their entirety and cannot find anything. Restarting the phone didn't bring them back and I am using the stock messaging. In fact, other than Crystal Defenders and Angry Birds RIO..I have nothing else installed at the moment.

Any ideas?

I haven't come across this problem, but I did find out that HTC Desire owners have this issue and have been told buy HTC that a fix is in the works. My suggestion to anyone affected by this problem is to notify HTC that it is a problem with the ThunderBolt as well.

Update: Seems to be a problem with many HTC phones
Update 2: Found this post on another forum. Apparently it's an Android OS problem due to lack of available memory. Check the link for more of a description.

Thanks for the HTC contact info. The link doesn't make sense though. This phone has more memory than the X and the og Moto Droid. I never had that happen on them.

Are you using chomp or handsent? I know these have done it before. You can also backup you texts with some apps. Some can even be stored to the sim card.

Nope. I am just using the stock app. I use WaveSecure, so I was able to restore my messages.

Had it happen on my Droid(a855) a couple times. It seems to be related to unlimited message storing. Something trips it out when there are a lot of messages and it deletes EVERYTHING. I have in turn, set a limit(200 is fine for me) and never experienced the disappearing text trick again.

Howdy,

Same problem here.

I had 5.7k sms & 106 mms on my G1 (Dream) with a 2G micro SD card. My t-bolt is stock with 32G micro SD card for a total of 40G.

I used MyBackup Pro to move all messages over to the t-bolt.

I have lost all of my text messages 2x now on my t-bolt.

Turning off the phone & removing the battery did nothing.

I have also contacted HTC via the above link...we will see.

I lost all of my messages this morning. Using stock message app. I will contact HTC.

Can anyone recommend a backup program for text messages, or let me know how to move them to the SD card.

Funny... I just had the exact same thing happen to me today. I use Handcent. I checked the stock app and it was blank as well. There wasn't a bunch either.. so for sure a bug, but maybe not space related. I am rooted (since the second method was released) and cleaned up space used by bloatware.

I have had issues in the past where Handcent lost some messages, but if I went into the stock app they were there... not the case this time.

Howdy,

@luvzmutt - As mentioned above MyBackup Pro is good money invested. The non-pro version did not let me backup to online for transfer to my new phone where I lost the messages, but the non pro version should allow you to backup & restore to the same device...I think for 30 days only.

@opossum, thanks for the information. I e-mailed HTC and they suggested a SMS backup program as well.

@glenshadow, GO Sms did not keep my messages as well. As opossum said, (and HTC), use an SMS backup app.

Here is my response from HTC
We apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you Leslie. We understand the importance of keeping your data and messages stored for future reference.

The issue with regards to the messages disappearing without warning is currently being looked into, and we are working to find out the cause and solution for our customers.

In the interim we suggest a third party application from the android market such as SMS backup free if you want to keep your SMS messages. This application will back up your SMS messages to your Gmail account on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, preventing the need for storing the messages on the phone. This will also alleviate the possibility of the messages disappearing from the device by keeping the storage area for the messaging app free.

Remember that HTC does not support any third party applications and they are to be used at your own discretion. Having said this, SMS backup has proven to be a reliable way to back up SMS messages on our android devices.

We apologize again for any undue duress this has caused you Leslie. Keep in mind that we are here to answer any questions or concerns you may have between 6am to 1am EDST, 7 days a week for your convenience.
