Root My touchscreen doesn't work right...

Palmetto Fellow

Android Expert
A few days ago, I was unable to type the letter "R". A few minutes later, I realized that I couldn't type "F" either. In landscape mode however, I can type both letters...but then there are other letters I can't type.

I've determined that the capacitive layer of my screen is starting to give. Anyone know how this layer is subdivided? In other words, if there is a problem, do I lose an entire column, or a half column, or is the screen separated into like 64 regions, and a few of my regions have gone bad?

I've also noticed that when not typing, I can't scroll the screen or even zoom in when using certain spots on my screen.

Luckily, I pay extra each month for the insurance. Unluckily, I am rooted with MikG 2.61 right now. So I am about to do my due dilligence and determine how to unroot so I can get this fixed soon. I'll start with some threads here and maybe watch a youtube video or two. I did already watch one video where they turned S-Off first, then applied the stock ROM. It seemed odd to me though...wtih S-Off, how do you actually apply the stock ROM?

Also another concern...could Sprint apply the latest OTA while they have the phone? Should I just expect a refurb replacement with the latest OTA already on it...or would a local Sprint store actually replace my screen and let me keep my phone? Any insight on what I can expect through this ordeal would be appreciated.

You could replace the digitizer, but doing so would void your warranty.

Unrooting your phone is a pretty straight forward process. I should move this thread to the all things root forum, but I'm on my phone. Give me a couple minutes to log on to a pc and move you over and get you some links.

In the mean time boot to your hboot (power and volume down) and post back all the info on this screen.

I had to unroot one of my family members phones for the exact same reason so they could get it replaced by sprint.

I've heard its not too bad to replace yourself

What does replacing the digitizer mean? EDIT: I am watching a video now about replacing the digitizer... Also what are the warranty implications? I assume I am already out of warranty...and the only thing I have now is the extra extended service plan with Asurion insurance.

Also, does anyone know the protocol for getting this resolved? Can a local store fix this, or will it go to a repair depot? Will a local store have a refurb model to trade me for mine? Will Sprint send me a refurb phone with advance replacement and then I send back the bad phone?

If you have insurance through asurion you will have to send your phone to them. Youll get a replacement (refurb) phone a few days later.

Maybe youll get lucky and get an evo 3d

Hmmmm, I am a bit confused. A year ago, Sprint announced that broken screens could be repaired for like $50 or less for anyone who needed it. This is less than the deductible from Asurion. Has this policy stopped?

Also, I thought Asurion only dealt with broken phones, not defective ones. In other words...dropped phone, cracked screen, water damage...those go to Asurion and usually require a $100 deductible. I've been through this process from them already. They send the replacement phone BEFORE you send them back your broken phone.

In my situation, there is no physical damage, and thus it's a screen replacement right? Or at the very least, it should go through Sprint's support rather than being written off to an insurance company.

That being said, I have no idea how any of this works internally...so for all I know, anything wrong with an EVO these days automatically gets another phone and is processed through Asurion.

I don't get insurance through Sprint anymore, but this is what I remember...

Typically sprint offers a 1 year warranty on the hardware of the phone from the day you got it. If there are any hardware/software issues at this time you can take it back to them and they will fix it as long as it is not the end users fault (water damage, drops, ect).

The insurance extends the Sprint warranty and will go past the 1 year as long as they keep getting paid. Depending on the company, they may cover user damage.

Once the sprint warranty is up, they will typically still fix your stuff... for a price.

Cant hurt taking it to them and seeing what they want for it

OK, I've spoken with Sprint and there are 3 repair facilities close to me. I then called the closest one and they had a couple of digitizers left, so he's holding one for me. I am going in tomorrow to get this replaced.

So the logistics of the repair are handled. Now, I just gotta unroot and restore Sense ROM by the time I go to sleep tonight. I've seen some threads here and there and I can probably find the info I need within an hour or so...but that shouldn't stop anyone from posting some links that would be helpful :)

I do have one question though. I was planning on leaving the phone as-as once restored. I wasn't even going to input my gmail account as it is linked to everything. Apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, and some scren capture apps are all linked to that account. I'd also prefer that there be no access to my Gmail and such. Is this a concern? Also, do service technicians perform OTA updates and such for my "convenience"?

Well, I'm unrooted now. It was a little unsettling I must admit as I was having a bit of trouble figuring out how I would be able to continue using my EVO with MikG after obtaining S-ON. That just didn't seem right to me, so when the procedure says to reboot and then bring a file over, I wondered how this would work...but it all went smooth. At least, it was smooth up until the last file. I kept getting errors and it took a long time.

It would say stuff like "File not found" or "Incorrect file" or something like that. It was referring to PC36IMG and also PC36DIAG. I was like "oh great" now what do I do. But I left it alone, and then saw a progress bar, and eventually I started to see progress...but it spit out the same paragraph of errors a second time...which made me nervous again...but it finally finished. Everything appears stock now.

OK, so I have a new digitizer and a new LCD screen according to the repair technician. After the digitizer was fixed, I noticed that my earpiece speaker wasn't working properly. I called them back and went in the next day. Apparently, the only way to fix the earpiece is to get a new screen. Does the speaker really come with the screen? They happened to have one, so he replaced the screen as well.

Everything seems to work fine now...so I'll give it a bit to marinate and then I'll look to root again. That being said, I am a bit apprehensive to root. The stock camera app works better IMHO. MikG 2.61 camera app does not focus and take the picture by holding your finger down on a subject in the frame (it just focuses). I also couldn't get the HDMI output to work. Does the newer 3.X version of MikG solve any of this?

There ARE stock sense1.0 based ROMS that wouldnt change the camera app.

Tommy's Classic Tomatoe and Swagged out Stock are a few of the more well-known ones, but there are many other 4.67 based ROMS out there.

for future reference... if u need to have ur phone replaced with the insurance(asurion), there is no need to unroot ur device... they dont care if its rooted or not. asurion just replaced mine a month ago due to a cracked screen, the sprint rep at the repair place told me not to bother unrooting.... if its under warranty however, unroot is a must.
