Root N00b question: Which ROM?

Once you're in Clockwork Recovery via x+power, you can do everything in one fell swoop:

Wipe Data/Factory Reset (x3)
Install zip from SD card
Choose zip from SD card
Navigate to UD2.5 (which will look like "ultimate_sholes-ota-eng.blackdroid2.5.0)
Install it and away you go!

I really don't know why your Droid is giving you such a hard time with recovery... someone smarter than me is going to have to explain that one. Shouldn't be hard to find

Software is like voodoo. I apparently omitted the "sacrifice chicken on the keyboard" step.

Updating everything from TiBU right now.

Edit: TiBU is done, restoring from MBP now. Looks to be pretty seamless so far. ROM feels pretty snappy, too, especially after fixing the Home in memory.

I don't know why it is so hard to get CWRecovery to stick via Rom Manager on a stock rooted rom. I'll have to look into the scripting for RM and see. I do know that the solution (besides installing a custom rom, or in the interim) is these commands (via terminal or adb shell):

Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/null /system
mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p.bak
mount -o remount,ro /dev/null /system

good luck

AWESOME! If you use LauncherPro (many people do) you can set a couple of things to speed up the home redraws:

In Preferences, select "Advanced Settings" and "Memory Usage Settings". Then CHECK "Use Homescreen Caches" and "Build Caches as Needed".

If you DON'T use LauncherPro, then there is another setting in UD 2.5:

Ultimate Settings--> Performance Settings--> Set VM Heap Size to 24. If it's not already at 24, set it there and reboot to save the settings.

I think, between fonts and bootanimations, custom colors and interface tweaks, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the versatility of Ultimate Droid 2.5 and it'll keep you busy for awhile customizing it.

ENJOY!

I at first had the best luck with ultimate droid 1.0 and 2.5 as they were very stable and reliable roms. have grown to adapt to gingerbread and really like it and currently running stock gingerbread gpa13 build overclocked with rza kernel 1100 mhz and have had no issues.

Well, I'm plugging right along with this. I have to say that it is faster and less lag-prone than stock Froyo. I did switch over to LauncherPro and I like it, for the most part, though it occasionally crashes. The seven homescreens and ability to tweak how many rows and columns are in use is nice. Still a spot of lag here and there, but much better than stock.

Chief, can you give me an overview of how you have various things set up on your builds of UD and LauncherPro? I've set it up the way you've suggested thus far, but I'm not sure about some of the other settings, like the built-in overclocking, compcache ram, use of JIT, VM heap if you're using LauncherPro (which was set at 24 as default...keep it there?), any of the multitude of settings in LP that may influence things. Also, what's a good mount of internal memory to keep free so that things don't get bogged down? I have a bunch of apps installed, but I have moved most of them that don't have homescreen widgets to the SD card. Also, are there any widgets that are known to cause performance issues? Right now I have the Weather Channel widget, Fancy Clock/Weather widget, Jorte calendar widget, the (pretty much worthless) FaceBook widget, and the Power widget running.

Thanks again, you've been a real help!

Mike

You know what? I don't have ANY memory freed up in UD settings, nor do I use the built-in overclocking (I use SetCPU). I would leave ANY app with a widget on the phone, not on the SD card. You can set the overclocking to performance speed when you need it, and underclock when you don't (saves battery). Try to keep it simple: the more stuff you have to keep track of, the more you have to think about if something needs tweaking. Remember, IT'S A PHONE :)

Good luck and have fun tweaking!

Don't forget to MAKE A BACKUP just before you tweak major things... if the phone gets hosed, you can just nandroid back.

Yeah, but I'm using it as a phone and a PDA and a netbook and a...and a...and a...

What's the point of a merged device if it's just a phone? ;) I could buy a Jitterbug... ;)

Thanks,

Mike
