nandroid backup question

alpha2k

Android Expert
I am rooted using agat kernel, and it has agat recovery. I want to go to cwm, but I also want to make a nandroid backup of stock rom rooted to revert back to.

You have to use the same recovery you used to make the recovry the nandroid backup with, ie: , if I make a backup with agat recovery, I cant use cwm to restore it with, I have to use agat recovry to restore it with, same with cwm.

So my question is how do you make a nandroid of stock with cwm not installed. Can I flash cwm and not boot to the rom, but reboot into cwm and make a nandroid that way, will that work??

You can flash the kernel with AGAT recovery then reboot right into AGAT recovery and restore from your backup. It just adds an extra step of flashing the kernel with the recovery that is compatible with your backup.

What I'm after is basically a pc free way of doing this. As of right now to root the way that is listed on here, you have to use odin and agat kernel, which has the recovery burnt into it.
Once you go to CWM, to get back to agat you have to odin agat tar file again, which means you have to have acess to a pc. I tried another version of agat recovery only in a zip format, and rebooted to it, tried to restore the image, and it didnt work, so that means you have to have the exact recovery you did the nandroid with, otherwise it will md5 error on you.
In short you need the exact recovery to match the nandroid you did, they are not backwards compatible or cross platformed.

I know the reason behind useing agat though, it's because agat is a Stock TW recovery, where as cwm is not, so doing a nandroid for stock root would not work in cwm, hence the reason you need an agat kernel to root.

I have the agat recovery, I suppose I could flash to it after doing odin the agat kerrnel, then save a nandroid, just not sure that would work.

To my knowledge, if you do not boot into the system, nothing will change or be written.

I'm gona go test my theroy and report back.

Well it looks as if I have to go back to stock and agat once again, bleh this just blows, I cannot for the life of me find a good working rom that things work correctly.
Latest CM9 build for this phone has no data, so I looked in phne status, everything data releated is listed as unknown :(......and I also found out cm9 the video is broke....sigh......only rom left that has the feature I want is aokp, and I can't find a working build of it now, it seems the links are all dead or missing.

Yes you can flash to an AGAT kernel from CWM. I have flashed back to AGAT from a kernel that had CWM in it I was trying the kernel but didn't like it because it was based on an older version and didn't support options I wanted. The method used to achieve root listed here is only stuffing an already rooted kernel on the phone that also has a recovery so you can flash in superuser (the gate keeper to allow apps that need root access to have it). AGAT recovery is based on CWM, and yes you can have a TW ICS kernel that has CWM, (the one I tried was FF18 based with CWM5).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760299

The key is if you are on a TW rom you need a kernel that is for TW to be able to use the phone. If on the other hand you are using the kernel for flashing only you just need to boot into the phones recovery and don't have to boot up into the phone's normal OS mode (as is used by people going to El29 gingerbread kernel just to flash another ROM).

Well I found a rom that seems to work, but I can't test out gps because it has no file browser. I have a zip I can run from recovery, but the rom (and I'm guessing here) has the stock recovery baked in, so I'm rooted, on aokp milstone5, and stock recovery.

So what do I do now?

EDIT:
Scratch that one.

I seem to have the only phone that can't use the roms I want to and have things work correctly (note the sarcasm).

cm9 roms have a broken video, where if you run a video and hit stop, it crashes the camera app. I've had one cm9 where the data didn't even work, it showed up under phone>status as unknown in all the boxes, would explain the no 3g data :). I've tried 3 cm9 rom versions, all the same thing, but this is a noted issue with cm9 and codename roms about the camera issues.

AOKP ICS roms the gps doesn't even work. I get the gps symbol, but the middle blinking ring doesn't blink at all, no gps AT all. So not even a trying or anything, just simply nothing.

I tried 3 different JB roms, and they ALL have the gps lock issue. So JB is out of the question.

I've looked at other roms, and they are basically not that much more than stock is. I am after one specific thing in the roms I see, and that's the power toggle that the roms use in the notification. The closest I can come to that is widgetsoid, but it doesn't scroll like the rom ones do. That feature alone if I could get it in my stock rom I'd be happy with just that.

Agat 5.4 uses CWM recovery. If you dont want to use a PC, download mobile Odin in the play store. You transfer from PC once and then mobil odin from there. The Blu Kuban has 15 toggles in it notification, Rujelus22 just Odexed it and Im checking for issues now. Found none. It comes with the Aroma installer that lets you pick a variation of apps and battery, clock mods beforeyou even install. Once installed the Kuban updater lets you customize it evenmore right from the rom. Its so fast and smooth, it has all the JB tweaks plus JB music, keyboard n soon JB camera but none of the bugs. Ive also flashed the Galaxy Notes gallery to this rom, its amazing has 3D animations baked right in. Give it a spin

AGAT 054 has AGAT recovery. It is like CWM but it is not CWM. It is fine for backing up, but not for flashing to a different ROM

It looks as if Odin mobile is a no go. Says my device is not supported for Odin mobile.
Device not supported (or detected -check root)!
I didn't see my device on the list either, SPH-D710.

I swear this is a conspiracy with all the issues I'm having lol!!

I'm still plugging at it though, but I think Blu Kuban is my last resort somehow.

Cerj, thankyou so much for the suggestion and find. This rom works nicely, and has a ton of features, I've never seen so many features in a rom, it's loaded!!!!
Im not really fond of all the blue, heh, but overall it's nice. It's gonna take me forever to go thru all the goodies!

Glad you like it, and I was hoping you would. If you have a Sprint or Boost Mobile Epic 4G Touch then you can use mobile Odin, in the play store mobile Odin Pro scroll down 8th phone from top, between att sgs2 and us cellular sgs2. Your good to go. There is a new Odexed update from 1.0.5.1 to 1.0.5.2 or the new rom 1.0.5.2. VERY fast and smooth. If you should want a transparent accuweather or digital clock lemme know. after the rom settles update you PRL then profile in update in settings.

Also when I said Agat uses CWM recovery I should have been more specific, Agat is 'based' on CWM, when you do a nandroid it says CWM as well. Agat is considered a safe recovery for ICS becuz of it. One of the ways they make a SAFE recovery is to bake a stock gingerbread update_binary into it, as opposed an ICS update_binary. Its the stock ICS update_binary that cause's so many of the problems. Wth that being said, it is always best to read the Dev's OP of the rom you want to flash. When in doubt and flashing to ICS use EL26 or EL29. There is a EL29 direct boot I use, as soon as you flash the kernel in Odin/ mobile Odin it automatically reboots into recovery ready to flash your rom.

Thats the one I bought. I get the message posted above, then it gives the option to make a dump file or quit, then closes. Unless there is a way to bypass that, it's not usable. Would be nice if it was though.

Ill try to find a fix or fig out exactly whats up with mobile Odin, and post here if I find something.

Alright, think you uninstall it then install it from the play store and see if that helps. Did you give it super user rights?

I did give it SU rights, and that's when it came up and told me the phone wasn't supported.

It has since been updated and now supports this phone now, woohoo!!!!

Now if only someone could fix the dreaded gps lock on issue with JB I'de be a happy camper...however happy that may be....I assume pretty freekin happy since it's used a lot :). I just tried Odin mobile out and it worked like a dream.

Why do you prefer mobile odin over the windows version? And my gps works fine, running Paranoid Android atm.

I would say because you can do things "on the fly" without having to have a laptop with you. I myself wanted to try it, but back when I did get it the app didn't want to work with this phone (I am sure that has changed by now). I always have my laptop around so don't feel the need to use the mobile odin.
