Navigation App....GONE!

Noob here...Galaxy S3...

At some point I lost the Google Navigation icon. (Blue arrow) How do I get it back? It doesn't show up anywhere on the phone. S-voice does not open navigation when asked either.

Any ideas?

That's odd. Google Navigation is part of Google Maps. Google Navigation is not its own separate app-- even though it has its own separate icon. Do you have Google Maps installed? If not, you have to install Google Maps. If so, you may want to reinstall Google Maps.

It's probably the new Maps update which is rolling out at the moment. That removes Navigation as a separate pseudo-app (also Latitude, if you care about that).

You can still access navigation by planning a route in Maps. Once you've done that (and selected an option if it suggests multiple routes) you can then start Navigation.

Can't say I'm surprised that it's broken 3rd party apps that try to access Navigation directly though.

Edit: double ninja'd!! Though in my defense I did reinstall the new Maps and test this while composing this message...

I restarted the phone and it works fine now. I think I like the previous version better though.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I am at a total loss to explain this.

As of last evening, 10-JUL-13, I had a 'Navigation' icon. I have been using it and I used it last evening. It appears to tie into Google Maps and provides routing.

Today it is gone. Nowhere. Not in Applications, etc. There is nothing to indicate that it was removed by push/pull updates, etc.

I've been in IT for 30 years as a Unix / Linux Admin and for the historical record I did not inadvertently delete it.

ANY assistance greatly appreciated. Btw, it is still present on my Wife's S3.

Thanks!

Yeah, the Navigation app was actually an extension to the Google Maps app. There was a major update to Maps that was release yesterday. You device might have found that and if it is set to auto-update, it might have done just that. Removing the navigation shortcut might have been a side effect of that.

Since this is more about Maps/Navigation and not really root related or truly related to the S3, I've moved this thread to the Android Applications forum. Thanks for your understanding.

Ah, okay. Thanks for your immediate help! And sorry for posting in the wrong Forum.

Seriously, thanks for the virtually immediate response!

Best,

Ron

In this new map update is there no place where you can call up your contacts like you did in the previous version? There also seem to be several other features that were available in previous version not available in this version. Does anyone know if features are to be added?

I agree Neil154. The inability to get at contacts is a BIG ommission.
The only good thing about the new map navigation is the ability to see traffic on the nav route without switching views. I believe it is also capable of rerouting due to traffic but I could not find any settings for traffic preferences.

Must admit I have uninsulated new version for now.

Both my S3 and Nexus 10 show the "navigation" icon even with the new Maps updates. Only gripe with me is that pastel Metro nightmare gets ported to another Google App I like using with no way to get the previous theme back without using an outdated and likely less secure version.

Does anyone know how to exit navigation? It use to be that you'd tap on the menu button and then tap on "exit navigation". I can't find that option anymore. Once I get to my destination, I'd like to turn the darn thing off so that it doesn't keep trying to route me. Thanks.

I read on another website that if you uninstall Google Maps Navigation will automatically appear back with your apps. I just did it and it worked for me.

I'm unsure what you mean by "calling up" your contacts. Do you mean to actually get the contact card or to navigate to them? Just as a test, I started typing my name (I have myself in contacts with addresses) in the new Maps search box and after typing almost my whole name in and exhausting all common similar names (business) on the internet, it showed my home and work addresses. I was then able to click one and route or use navigation, however, that was the only info it gave, no phone or anything... Does that help any? LOL

droid razr owner here. Navigation used to bring up a nice set of tabs of recent destinations, contacts, a nice voice interface and all that, that was easy to use from a car dock. The new interface is crap. Once I am in navigation, it is not really the turn by turn point of view, it is some crappy old apple like navigation. This was one of the best features of Android, and now it has turned to crap. What are they doing to us?
