Help Navigation GPS problem

It is briefly mentioned here but I will re-iterate. There have been observations that the Camera flash panel (which is the GPS antena) may not be touching the spring contacts firmly.

There is a comprehensive thread on this somewhere here. I just squeeze the leds on the back lightly and it often results in a fix.

Tried all of the above and still getting eratic GPS. Drove for 30 minutes with GPS Status showing 6/6 satellites, but still no Navigation... Good thing that I knew where I was going... I mainly use my DHD for Navigation to see if it will work... I use TomTom to find reliably where I am going! Seems to me that HTC need to sort out the firmware and/or Google need to sort their software. I am going to go back through my mobile contract provider to see what I can get done... maybe if we all started doing that HTC/Google would get the message that as a GPS device, it's about as much use as a chocolate kettle! If you're in the UK, Consumer Direct will tell you what words to put in a letter. Great phone for everything else apart from GPS!

Hi to everybody, I found this forum and this topic, which seems much better that all the HTC call center

the same problem for me with HTC desire HD. Navigation premium was working properly, then few weeks ago I received an automatic update from HTC and immediately (I was using the naviation!!) it stopped to work!!
Now if I write a location the screen tries to go to the navigation map and tries to calculate the route, but then it comes back to the main screen (location or navigation premium, depending of the main screen I started) and it stay there, apparently looking for GPS.
I did all the suggested steps several times but nothing, I called the call center in UK but nothing.... the final suggestion of the call center "bring to the service to get repaired!!!".
Just unbeliveable!!!! before automatic update was working perfectly!!!

I just want to destroy it against a wall!!!!

It is a little rubbish if it was working and then, due to the update, it stops working... I know it may be a pain, but at least HTC are prepared to try fix it for you. I'd probably go down that route if I'd paid for the nevigation service... if they can't fix it, I'd start kicking off, as you've paid for a service that isn't working... try and claim money back from them - is the paid for nav service a monthly payment or a one off lifetime payment? Try and get some free stuff out of them!!!

I know what you mean... why have a function on a phone, if it doesn't work. It's not the reason I got the DHD, but it is a bit of a pain that it just doesn't seem to work. In fairness, I haven't tried any of the "take the phone to bits" methods to get it working... not that bothered... would just be a nice function if it did work. My mate has a Desire S (or Z) and the GPS works fine... so all I can assume is that it's a hardware thing (and so the only real way would be to take it to bits, clean the contacts and blah, blah, blah!) - shouldn't have to do something to the phone to have all of it's features working though... especially not something like taking bits off it and cleaning them!

My phone is rooted and I bet that, should I try and send it off to get it looked at, they would say that it was me that "broke" it when rooting!

Dear all,
I read this topic and others regarding more or less the same subject.... it is a fact that my problem is related to some updating coming from my service provider (wind mobile in Italy) or some automatic software updating.

The good news, at least half good, is that if I run the navigation without sim card or if I put in offline mode (airplane) IT WORKS!!!!!
if I introduce the sim card it does not work anymore!!!

If these informations are usefull for someone to solve problem, please tell us..... I keep hold my resolution to destroy the phone against the wall!!!

you are right DURX, I paid the permanent license of the built in navigation software and I was happy about it.
Now frankly speaking I'm sure that HTC will give the responsibility to phone provider and phone provider will do the same!!!
At same time I don't like to bring the phone to some service center which will keep for weeks!!!

HTC are the service provider for the navigation service though and the update is actually from them (even if it came from your network provider, it ultimately comes from HTC and is then carrier branded by whoever your mobile operator is). So the problem/fault lies with HTC!

Just out of interest... you said that your mobile provider is Wind, but you have been told to send the phone to a UK service centre - why would that be... or have I misunderstood?

So I have in any case to deal with HTC to solve the problem, OK I'll go straight with them.
Referring to the service center, I will refer to a italian based. The point is that there is not call center in Italy, so I had to call in UK (45 minutes from office, fortunately...), the accent of guy was very difficult for me!!!! They gave me the reference of a service center close to my place in Milan.... frankly speaking I don't know if they will "repair" the mobile in Italy or not.

What is strange it is that I didn't find a list of authorized service center

Maybe there aren't "authorised" (3rd party) service centres, but you would have thought that you would be able to find out where the actual HTC service centre is though!!

Hope you get it sorted!! I'd try and get an email address for HTC Italy and send them an email complaining that you can't use their paid for service and that you want some sort of compensation for this!

unbeliveable!! I called the UK call center, I sent e-mail, I got the very good support of this forum.... and finally I have also tried the chat support of HTC.....
Result: problem "solved", with the support of two Italian girls working in HTC chat service from Egypt!!!
The problem is the sim card. I have tried with another sim (vodafone) and everything is working fine!!! I don't know what happened to the wind sim, may be corrupted during automatic update or whatever, but that is the cause of all the problems!!!
I'll go to ask for a replace

Hi
I had terrible problems with my GPS, originally the GPS location worked really well more quickly in fact than my dedicated sat nav device, then for no apparent reason stopped working at all.

I tracked the problem down to a problem not with the phone, but with the nice new case I bought for it !!

Turns out the magnetic clip used to hold the case shut was preventing the GPS from getting a lock, took it out of the case it worked just fine put it back in, no lock. Initially I thought the case was obscuring the GPS antenna but then cut the magnets out of the case and it works perfectly now.

This may not be the answer to all the GPS lock problems but suggest you try removing it from any type of case first.

Hi RoyVas - thanks for your input... it is true that some cases/covers for the phone interfere with the GPS... as you've pointed out, your case has a magnetic clip on it, which has stopped the GPS working. This is something that I had heard of before - hadn't given it much thought, but a great post, for anyone else who is searching for info on this sort of issue in future!! :)

I took the voice guidance option for once and found myself dowmloadiing some app. Now I cannot use Navigator (pre loaded), as it just takes me to the market when I activate it. What can I do?

Worked great - thanks Omonkey!

PS - had to go outside to the top of my hill to get the satellites, but once I did they locked right away.

Chiensinoname my navigation on htc desire was working perfect until i sent it back for repair, board was changed then my naigation stoped working then i downloaded free andriod app called freenav and it works fine upto now.
