navigation .. which is which?

Hey guys, I wonder if you all know what is the difference between location, navigation and maps found under the HTC widgets. Where is the cached maps?

I don't, its all rather confusing... (plus the fact my phone isn't seeming to be able to find gps signal when its switched on and I'm standing outside. Must be due to the buggy update...)

Use the gps navigation system you find the easiest to use mate.

All three apps are just different ways of using google maps.

It can be quicker to use locations/navigation than it is to open maps and look for the function you require.

i too am struggling to find the cached maps, i thought you didnt need a data connection to use location maps, but it keeps asking me for a connection, i also thought in location maps when using them and a phone call come in it was spose to show at the bottom of the screen leaving you to still see the map, where as if i get a phone call it wipes the map out and shows everthing to do with the caller,
please could someone help me with this,

didnt mean to hijack your thread kakachan, figured we was after the same thing in around about way,

Ok,

Navigation is google maps. So if you use this you will use google to help you navigate.

Location is HTC own. You will need to subscribe to them if you want to use it as a sat nav through I think tom tom and pay a subscription.

The maps are preinstalled on the HTC location software and does not need the Internet to work, whereas google maps/navigation requires an internet connection to use and pre-download the maps. For Google navigation, you can pre-cache the route that you wish to go on before you travel, so you can download the maps over wifi before you travel.

Hope this explains it

HTC were a bit naughty with the PR on the catched maps thing. Not only do you have to subscribe to use it fully as a navigator but its also terrible to use.

Recommend you use Co-pilot instead.

i cant work out when ur using the htc version if some body rings you there were spose to pop up at the bottom not iterupting the sat nav, butit dont, it takes over the whole screen and cancels out the navigation, once the call is rejected or finished the navigation has to start all over again !!!!

I had an HTC Desire and was very happy with it except that it needed to have data connection for maps & navigation so I have just changed it for a Desire HD because I understood that it could store maps and would provide navigation without a connection and without a subscription.

Is this not true? If it isn't true then HTC have been dishonest in their advertising and I will be well pee'd off.

Can somebody give me a definitive statement on this or point me to where I can find one?

Thanks.

I'm using Locations - maps are on the SD card; I didn't have to pay for anything...

It might be dependent on your carrier (I'm on Vodafone Australia) but I was under the impression reading HTC's info that it's free to all users..

A previous post of mine

Basically; locations gives you offline maps and routing which will give you step by step routing. For full turn by turn guidance you need to pay a premium.

Google navigation gives you free routing but needs a data connection to plan your route. The latest version of google navigation uses vector graphics (uses less data and scales better). It also pre caches frequently visited locations and can re-route without needing a data connection if you go a little way off track.

For me, Google is fine on a daily basis and if I travel abroad there is the option to buy a 1 month guidance subscription for HTC Locations. ~

I tried out locations again after some time of not using it. It prompted me to that it needed to do a download of missing files. But after the download it appeared to work.

Thank you to Phatbass and drhunter for your replies which came just in time to stop my DHD being launched off my balcony.

The functions noted above are not totally what I hoped for but would be acceptable if I could get them to work here in Thailand.

Situation so far:
-The DHD tells me that Google Navigation is not enabled in this area.

-HTC Locations will do nothing without a data connection. I have the phone registered and the Thailand map downloaded. Maybe I have some basic phone setting wrong.

-Google Maps works with a data connection in the same way that it did on my Desire.

I will enquire of HTC Thailand re the Google Navigation and continue to experiment with HTC Locations. If anybody can give further advice, please do. Otherwise, the phone goes off the balcony and I go talk with the Nokia dealer. You can probably sense some frustration in this post; maybe I should have looked into this more closely before making the purchase.

Thanks.

OK, I have identified the problem but don't have a solution yet. I don't want to hijack the thread but will give the explanation as a heads-up to anyone else who may be affected.

I bought the phone in Thailand where I currently live. However, I downloaded the UK map before I did the Navigation upgrade using the voucher code, whereupon it gave me Premium Navigation for UK, not Thailand.

I have reported this to HTC Thailand who say they will attempt to swap the upgrade to Thailand and will call back.

Yeah the HTC navigator is rubbish. I use Google Navigator. I've tried CoPilot and yes it is good but not sufficiently better to justify paying for it.

anyone from india using 'mapmyindia'? Want to know if its worthy paying all the bucks they're asking for.
Both locations and maps went haywire today when i tried navigating from my home to a suburban mall - showed me on a completely wrong road. That's horrible - cant trust either of the 2 now.

It is on the front cover of the small booklet entitled 'Premium Navigation' that comes in the box.

After reading this i ran upstairs to get my box and do you no wot, NO !!!!! i too never had a booklet with 'premium navigation'

did this come as standard with all new handsets,

HTC Thailand never called me so I guess that I am stuck with what I have.

After reading this and other threads I'm not sure whether the upgrade for one country is permanent or is a licence for 30 days only. Can someone confirm either way?

Thanks.

Still picking this up, I recently got a Desire Hd and also i want to ideally use a navigation app, that doesnt use my data connection...im kind of understanding from this thread that copilot seems to be the best for this? i have found however if u have a data package it uses very little to download the maps.

I have the same issue as you HandyAndy, I used my voucher with a Singapore map and I needed Australian navigation. The phone was an Asian model and HTC have told me they can't transfer the licence and I'll have to pay for the Australian Premium Navigation. I also purchased another DHD from Singapore (UK version) and it did not have a voucher in the box. I'm not sure if this is normal for the UK model or if the seller took the voucher out before sending the phone.

The voucher provides lifetime navigation for one map. If you use premium navigation on another map, you get a 30 day trial before having to purchase a seperate licence. I'm not going to pay $80 for the Australian licence, I'll just use Google Navigation if I need that feature.
