Help Need Advice on Multiple Contact Types

Let me get one thing out of the way: I am an idiot. As such, go easy on me. :)

I just switched careers (now in food sales) so I now have a very large amount of new contacts from a variety of different sources (co-workers, vendors, and prospects). The problem is that they are now mingled in with friends and family and I don't like this; I'd sooner have them all in one spot.

I created groups for the three of them and I labeled each individual contact, but this is basically useless to me as I have to navigate to PEOPLE > (the rolodex icon), the group. This defeats the purpose of putting them in a group as I don't do "group actions" at any point in time.

My temporary solution has been to a lowercase "z" in front of all of my work contacts so they get sorted at the very bottom. In short, is there a better way of grouping contact types?

I don't care if the main contact list (People) only shows one group (whether it be Friends or an unnamed group) and I have to hit the rolodex icon to see all others. Nor do I care if I have to download a new application.

I appreciate any input.

Download go contacts from the market. They group contacts beautifully. And they have a cute new ufo theme, hehe.
