Root Need help badly!

I attempted to flash my phone from stock to cognition. I have never rooted or flashed before so I followed the how to videos posted on this website. I managed to load the update.zip file and then download titanium backup and copy the file over to my computer. I then installed Odin and this is where things went down hill fast. I opened up Odin like the video shows and got it to recognize the phone. I hit start on the odin program and it started doing its thing. then it got stuck, i was patient and left it for a long time. it was permanently stuck. exited out of odin and unplugged phone. turned phone back on, stuck in a continuous AT&T logo loop.

I made a jig using some resistors and managed to get it to the download screen. Brought up odin and connected phone, odin recognized phone and I hit start again. Odin got stuck again! This time the phone is stuck on the screen with a cell phone and pc caution sign. I have tried pulling the battery, holding down both volume buttons and power button and letting go of the power when the screen flashed to blank for the second time. Nothing will bring the phone back into download mode again. Even the jig is not bring it back into download mode. I have also downloaded the samsung mobile phone drivers as well. Its just permanently stuck on that screen and i can't go back into download mode. Any other suggestions?

Followed these videos posted in the cognition froyo build thread

UPDATE! Managed to get the phone into download mode. Opened ODIN one click first and then plugged in the phone. The computer and ODIN recognize the phone. Shows a com4 added. I hit start and ODIN hangs on file analysis now... 3 huge problems in a row.... i give up... this is a nightmare.

What version of the phone do you have? Pull the batter and check the white lable and it should be 4 digits long.

There have been several occasions where the Odin download was corrupted. I would suggest downloading it again...........also try a different USB port.........that has helped some. Good luck.

thanks for the replies back guys! Really appreciate your help. I have a 1012 Cappy, I'm sure its a JH7 because its so new. I have also downloaded 3 different ODINs and they have all stuck on that " file analysis " section.

i have also researched and found that the JH7 phones have the 3 button combo disabled so you can't get into download mode unless you have a jig on the newer phones. My jig sucks because its only the resistor wires and no plug, no one around here sells the right kind of plug, so i have to fish for the 4 and 5 connector pin. So if things mess up and I have to pull the battery it starts the whole mess over again.

Search XDA forums for the odin fix for any build after 1010. There is a special version of odin for new phones that will successfully flash as the older version will only flash the older versions.

I just recently saw that as well. My question is, since I already connected my phone to the odin one click and hit start, then it bricked my phone, do I need to keep using the one click or do I download the original Odin and put in the original .bit file but use the newer JH7.tar file and try running it again?

Do not keep using One-Click, it's not going to get you anywhere. Get your phone back in Download Mode, and follow my link to get your phone back and running.

It's not a special version of Odin, it's a different process. And no, you won't be using Odin One-Click on a 1010 phone.

Great thanks for info. I'm still so new to this and not understanding most of it, if I follow these steps you provided, will it be back to complete stock at that point? I'm just seeing on those steps to use the clockworkmod, side loader, Z4 root, etc and just wondering if its going to be stock or rooted? If i wanted to flash to cognition on a JH7 phone how would I do it if I can't use ODIN?

You follow the post to use Odin3 to flash to stock. Once you're done, you'll be on stock JH7. Then if you want to flash Cognition, you just follow the instructions on how to flash a custom rom. Custom rom installations are done through Clockwork Mod Recovery typically. Not Odin One-Click, or Odin3. (Before any of you experienced guys jump down my throat for saying this, I put emphasis on "typically")

Thank you! I was just re-reading that link you provided and a light bulb went off, that flashes the phone into JH2 or whatever, lets just say version 2 and I want to be version 7 (JH7). I can try samsung kies, or at&t update via 3G and upgrade that way to version 7, where I want to be and then i'm totally done, BUT if kies and AT&T don't work, then I have to follow the Z4 root, clockworkmod steps in order to get it to version 7. I think... right?

Yes.

But, I STRONGLY suggest you avoid trying to get the JH7 update Over-the-Air. Try Kies, if that doesn't work, root and clockwork to JH7.

People who have problems with the JH7 OTA upgrade end up hard-bricking their phones. It's not certain that you would get a bad JH7 install OTA, but I personally wouldn't take that risk.

Ok i will not use the AT&T route. Thanks for the heads up. Well, I will try for the next 2 hours to get my phone back into download mode with my pathetic resistor wires and go from there. I hope everything goes smoothly after this. Thank you again and everyone else for all of your time and help, I truly appreciate it.
