Root need help flashing ROM

I am completely new to this and i have so many questions that sound so dumb =( i did the whole one click root thing using Z4 and then i was advised to use rom manager but apparently that was a bad idea. i just rooted my phone (samsung epic 4g) 2 days ago and i dont know where to go from there so i want to start with getting roms. BUT i dont know where or how to get them.
oh and will wiping my factory data and all that wipe my entire phone clean??

100% sincere here... but the BEST thing you can do is read, read, read and read some more... then ask a bunch of questions.... then read more... etc. The reasoning behind this is so that you know what you are getting yourself into and what you need, etc. The last thing anyone wants or needs is to mess something up and have no idea how to fix it (and can't find a solution anywhere). :)

Now, it appears that you've already done some reading, you'll need to install clockwork recovery. The easiest way to do this is with the one click root/recovery method over here on XDA. That being said, I don't know how rooting with Z4 may or may not cause problems with running the one click I linked. If Z4 has an "unroot" option, I would suggest doing that and using the one click root linked above. :)

Perhaps someone with more Z4root experience will be able to chime in?

Let me say that I come from the EVO and try to keep up with things on the Epic because I helped a friend root.....so take what I say lightly...

What happened when you used ROM Manager? Rom manager at leasts allows you to flash a recovery method(in this case clockworkmod). Is that what you were trying to do?...If you can get a clockworkmod on your phone, then that is a good thing. I guess the real question is just how rooted you are with the Z4 method. I know on the EVO it only gives you partial root(what we call s-on...dunno the verbage in the Epic world). Basically partial root allows you to use root apps from the market(ie wireless tether) but does not allow you to flash nand backups or custom ROMs. If you get anything out of this, DO NOT attempt to flash a custom ROM without a recovery method. If you can successfully pull of what Kelmar is suggesting, I would go for it....at least that is a known quantity. But it appears that Z4 does different things to different phones.

^Clockwork installed from ROM Manager seems to be problematic on most Epics. It also fails to properly boot into clockwork recovery. :)

well like Kelmar said rom manager doesnt really work on my phone. everytime i try to "backup current rom" it says "failed to verify whole-file signature" etc etc. at which point i just go back and try again and each time it says the same thing. im starting to think that Z4 wasnt such a good idea as well so im going to go ahead and unroot it and then try again with something else. i have been doing tons of reading but i believe i may need to read just a bit more to fully grasp everything. and yea i also noticed i cant tether (for free of course) with any program i use

ok i have unrooted it. and now im attempting the one click root from XDA. so i do everything exactly as the instructions list. i download all the drivers and then extract them as instructed. i plugged up my phone after i made sure it was in debugging mode and then i go to the last step that says "3. extract and run runtryfirst.bat or runtrylast.bat" and the screen tells me that the phone is not connected press any key to continue....and i know it is VERY MUCH connected. lol im so stumped as to how i am messing this up.

Keep trying them, it may take a few tries. run the try first followed immediately by the try last. Sometimes they hang, so give then a few minutes. :) I'll link you to an appropriate tethering app when I get home from work.

ok so after ALL of this hard work i have done and research, i have come to the realization that its not my phone that is messing up at all, its actually my laptop. my usb ports all have malfunctioned so i need to either fix it or get a new laptop. for now im going to use my boyfriend's laptop because it seems to be working. ill let u all know how it goes *crosses fingers*
