How do I switch from 3G to 2G on the phone? Also, should I turn animations off? also, Should I have background data turned off? ALSO, when im on the home screen or just playing a singleplayer game, how do I know if the 3G is doing stuff? I would like to not have my 3G going off when I have no need for it so I dont rack up my data usage. Is it when the up/down arrows under H+ on the top of my screen are lit up and moving does that mean its using the 3G? How do I enable the 3G not to be used when im not doing stuff that requires it?

Also, what should I have enabled and turned off as far as Synching and data collecting? I want to try and conserve battery life on this thing as much as possible.

ALSO, does anyone have any rules of thumb for downloading apps of the marketplace so I dont get Virus's or my info stolen? Basicaly how do I practice safe app downloading?
 
you can set one of the HTC widgets...I think it's called "Data Dashboard"...that will let you toggle off the stuff you don't want running. There are also toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.
If you want to just see how much data is being used at various times, there are apps that can monitor this. I don't know which is the best though.

re: downloading - if you only download free apps, and only download from the official Android marketplace you will not have your info stolen (cuz they don't have it) and you can trust official marketplace to be pretty much virus free.

Did Google institute a vetting process recently? I was under the impression that anyone could upload an app, given the speed that the "Droid Flashlight" was uploaded, following a thread started in the Droid forum when the D1 was released (2-3 days from the time someone suggested that a flashlight should be created, to the time when a forum member had it in the market, following testing by other members, myself included). Given the incident a few weeks ago when Google pulled a dozen or so "problem apps", I would think that security should still be a concern despite an app being "in the market".

i see. i guess the only logical solution is to turn in my inspire for a dumb flip-phone out of fear of the possibility of getting a virus from an app in the marketplace. In addition, i might as well take back my PC because i'd hate to get some malware or spyware from the "internet" as well...

It's one thing to state as an absolute, that the market is "issue free", versus stating the possibility exists that malware could be downloaded from the market...because, "at one time, Google had no screening process for apss available in the Market". But again I pose the question, "did Google implement a vetting process recently?" If so, the it would be less of a chance of finding malicious apps in the market.
