First allow me to welcome you to Android Forums, mcr555. :)

As to your issue of charge being invoked with attachment of your USB/charging cable to the USB port on your PC, most versions of the Android operating system (Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Froyo, etc) have a selection somewhere in the menu settings which allow for a "USB Debugging" choice.

Some bring a popup prompt to the device screen with the choice to charge or move files.

The menu path is slightly different from one version to another, but try: menu > settings > applications > development. In that section you may see the choice for "USB Debugging," make sure it's checked.

Other users of the Galaxy Y (which I've never handled ;)) will chime in and tell you exactly what to do in your menus if you can't find it just exploring around. ;)

The other thing that must be certain: Samsung's driver must be installed on your PC for the computer to properly interact with the device. Have a look here:

Thanks for the welcome.

USB debugging is checked on my phone but still, it would charge. Any other ideas on how to stop my cellphone from charging when connected to PC?

i believe phone manufacturers all over the world doesnt get what you want. all cables i can think of charges.

i dont think usb charging can do that much damage to your GY or your batt. i found some articles even saying Li-Ion batteries actually do better with frequent partial charges/discharges. it will in fact have more benefits, ex tethering which requires power.

if you dont want it to charge while transfering or syncing files, you should use blue tooth.

if there should be an app, i coudnt think of one. id be happy to know if something exist but would leave that to the market for somebody else to download.
