Root need help overclocking.

i want to overclock my epic. Ive never done this before but Im a quick learner. I want it to be as fast as i cant get it but remaining stable and reliable at all time. can you guys give me some direction here? will i need a to install a rom? or just kernel? or both ? can you help me narrow this down? i searched buy came up with too much scattered info. thx in advance.

you would want to root and then use an app like SetCpu. or even better, there are some great custom di18 kernels, such as the xtreme kernel, that are already overclocked. one good combo for speed that i've tried is Syndicate rom with the xtreme kernel.... and it was fast! right now i'm running the Eclair version of Epic Experience, with the Phoenix Kernel, and that combo has great battery life, and can also be overclocked with SetCpu. there's plenty of fun stuff to try!

if i use setcpu on stock it wont over clock, right? dont i need a overclocked kernel?

i think you need a custom kernel, but i'm not positive.... i've never tried it with stock. the xtreme kernel was very fast even without setcpu, and the Phoenix kernel is designed more for battery life, and then to be overclocked with SetCpu i believe.

ok i just got the sydicate file. do i drag it onto my sd then open bootloader, and click install zip?

how is battery life on syndicate? worse than stock? better?

i found battery life on Syndicate to be better than stock. you can also go to the xtreme kernel thread and grab the latest version of the kernel to flash right after flashing the Syndicate rom. but the 'standard' and 'fully-loaded' versions of syndicate do have a version of the xtreme kernel built in.

are you rooted yet? if so, then i would boot into recovery, do a backup, wipe everything 3x(as described anywhere telling you how to flash a custom rom), then flash the rom and kernel. it's a bit much to write here, but you can find instructions on the xda site, or this one.

edit: yep, you just drag the dwnloaded roms and kernels from your computer to your sd card. then boot into recovery, etc.

ya im rooted and stock. since im stock do i still need to wipe 3x? or is that only if i have a custom rom/kernel and i want to install a different one?

i say it never hurts to do the wipes, and can potentially hurt not to do them. it might not always be completely necessary, but i usually wipe, flash the rom, then the kernel. just for flashing a kernel tho, i never wipe data.

i saw the pheonix rom has network tweaK for speed. what is this exactly? faster data?

i'm not sure what that is. i am running Phoenix kernel 1.43 right now, and with setcpu running, it seems almost as fast as syndicate/xtreme.... and the battery life is great.

do you know what speed syndicate is overclocked to? setcpu will over clock it even more?

i don't think u need setcpu with syndicate... i believe it is set to as high or 1 step higher than what you can do w/setcpu.... not positive tho. but setcpu does give you other options, like setting the minimum and maximum speeds, and scaling, which i'm too tired to describe exactly what that is, lol. so actually, setcpu is still good to have :) read thru the Phoenix thread and you'll get an idea about setcpu... that's what i did.

shouldnt it be faster? i installed setcpu but i dont know how to use it, im more familiar with overclock widget. can u give me a hand?

its 1214 now after oc widget

i've heard that quadrant and linpack scores are perhaps not a reliable gauge.... i just go by how the rom feels, and it just seemed like everything was loading really fast, and downloads were super quick, etc. which version of Syndicate did you flash? there is one version that does not have the xtreme kernel included..... also you can try different versions of any kernel, because some could be better than others.

is there a way to get the samsung widgets back? i was the one like friendstream that shows all social network accents on one screen
