Root need help rooting my android

Wilford_B

Newbie
Hi to the android community!
I am a noob to "androiding" and want to use my phone for WiFi tethering and at this point I know it requires a root. i have android 2.2.2 on my lg ally. I looked at SuperOneClick and it looked somewhat risky. I cannot find a walkthrough online with my phone and firmware version, and i dont want to brick my phone either,so help will be appriciated. :)

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: is there any risk with SuperOneClick? Thanks

I looked it up and it says compatible with 2.1 not 2.2.2. If I just try it is there a risk of bricking?

does it say "2.1 and up"?

Honestly the best place to ask questions like this are in the forum below. Each phone has its own forum, and subforum for all things root.

Ally - All Things Root - Android Forums

I'm going to move this thread to that section for you now so that you can get the best help from people that own the LG Ally.

hello there. Z4 root doesn't work anymore, Gingerbreak.apk DOES but is not advised. if i was you i would downgrade to the original software to gain fastboot access then update and root. we have a guide here.

I second Gingerbreak, because I used it myself. There are some here who do not support rooting via single click apps, but I have found very few people having problems using them. You just have to make sure that you have the ability to use fast boot or Amon Ra (GNM - I think) to do recovery in the event of a major problem. All in all, you should be fine.

I would also recommend Velocity 1.1 as a custom rom for giving your Ally a boost in performance that is significantly noticeable.

My $.02

People seem intimdated by the guide:

It really is extremely easy. Follow the instructions and it takes about 20 minutes. Most of that time is spent watching the automated process. You do very little.

Benefits of the guide:

You are guaranteed to have fastboot access.
Your recovery WILL stick on the first attempt (the guide installs it for you).
The drivers for your phone will be installed on your computer.
You have the option to remain stock or have velocity installed.

I have never used gingerbreak. I am sure it works just fine, but I cant see it being that much easier than the guide. You may save a couple of minutes.

Theres no difference in the "root" you get from gingerbreak or super one click versus the guide. The difference is fastboot. If you already have it, gingerbreak may be easier. The guide also sets up adb and fastboot on your pc, so any future troubles will be easier to resolve with these tools. If you dont want fastboot, by all means use gingerbreak, but i can remember about 4 specific occasions where someone got into a bootloop and couldnt access recovery. Thats only what i know in my short time here. IT HAPPENS. If youre going to be flashing ROMS and doing more than removing bloatware then i think you should have it. I mean if its as simple as it is, why risk you being that person who had the issue and be kicking yourself because you didnt downgrade.

He has a point. Common sense.
