Root Need Help Upgrading to 4.0

I am trying to upgrade my Verizon HTC Rhyme and I was wondering if I needed to root it first. I don't know how, so any help would be great. Also, can I get a download link with the file? I am new to this, so I have no clue what I am doing and don't want to mess my phone up.

You don't need to root to update your device. You should see if it needs updated by going to Settings > About Phone > Software update. If it has an update than accept it or if not you could ask around if your device will ever receive the latest update. If not then the knowledgeable members here will walk you through how to root it.
