i need a way to wireless tether on the gb leak wireless tether app and barnacle app dont work i downloaded the patch so i could use the 3g mobile hotspot app but everytime i try to use that my 3g dissapears and i lose connection. please help

Your better off completely letting go of the illegal tethering apps. It has been rumored that the carriers are finally cracking down on apps such as wireless tether and barnacle. If you wanna tether then your best bet is to pay the $20 a month for it.

Agreed with the other posts. Now that the carriers are working on cracking down on the hacked wireless tethering, most everyone has dropped even supporting anything to do with hacked wireless tethering(i.e. meaning trying to hack it in GB and helping anyone in forums with questions about it). So, your best bet is probably to pay the money and go with the VZW plan for it. From what I read, GB makes it near impossible anyways and to risky with the carrier crack down.

So hey, if they're making real progress towards not having hacked tethering, do you think we'll see more willingness for carriers to let you root your phone/unlock bootloaders? It's pretty widely accepted that the big reason they're so against it is to prevent hacked tethering, yeah?

Well, I don't really know if it is the carrier that is locking down the bootloader. Motorola has the bootloader locked on the X, not the carrier. Other phone makers do not have them locked down. So, I don't think bootloaders being locked are a carrier issue...at least don't think they have been. That could change though.

All that we know on this issue was given to us in a Twitter post by P3Droid. He claims to know a lot of people on the inside and the leaked files that he and his TBH team manage to come up with do validate the claims in some way.

I mention the above to say that everything that anybody knows on this is speculation. The carriers really haven't flinched on the unpaid tethering thing but it stands to reason that they will put a stop to it as LTE (4G) rolls out. Well, they may do that or they may choose to say that you can use the data as you please but you must pay in a metered plan.

As for locked down bootloaders, other companies are beginning to lock theirs down as well. I think that it is a balance between carriers preferring that folks stay out of the inner workings of the phone and the phone makers want to protect their proprietary software such as Motoblur or HTC Sense, etc.

would like to know the answer to this post as well

whether or not it's a good thing or almost impossible doesn't matter - for me, I would use it once every couple of months and that's it, so I'm not that worried about VZW cracking down on me. specifically, I would have used it last night since the weather here has knocked out our internet and my wife wanted to view the weather warnings for our area (cable TV was knocked out, too.)

You and I are in the same boat here. Weather is knocking our internet on and off and I need it for weather warnings. To get tethering to work on GB flash the tether hack from TBH (the one he took down). Then install "Wireless Tether" from market. Fire up wireless tether and set up your SSID and stuff. Then turn it on. Stock tethering will pop up saying you are tethering (thats fine) go to stock (via notification bar) and set up tethering there with the same exact settings as Wireless Tether. Then turn on and off wireless tether (stock one) and then click off "mobile network" if that option is available (sometimes it doesn't pop up)... then go back to Wireless Tether, turn it on and off and then back on. Boom, tethering works.

I know this is convoluted, but it does work. I did it last night during the storms. I don't support free tethering, but if its the safety of my family or using a few mb of data to find out the weather... I'll use the damn data.

Lol! Anyone with the patience to do all that deserves to have their free tethering IMHO. :D

I know... it was tons of trial and error. I just did it again to see if it would work and it does. I'm posting this while tethering on GB. I did have to disconnect and reconnect my computer after the first connect to tether (kept saying there wasn't an internet connection)... but it seems to be working fine now... except that I now live in a horrible cell zone and had to walk around the house to find 3G.

Thanks for posting the instructions jonathanmsims.

Now the OP has a solution, I'll close this. If you want to contribute to the debate over whether or not people should be using/discussing tethering without a plan, please use this thread.
