Help need help with a setting pls

Hello- Im new to the forum and new to the Android. I have the Epic 4g and I am trying to see if I can get an LED light to flash when I have a new message/email. When my phone is on the counter, I find myself always having to take my screen out of sleep mode just to see if I missed a message. Can someone please help me with this???
