i need to get a new battery for my note 3
but I'm not sure what i should go for

If use don't mind can someone recommend a external battery case as well

Any reason you need a new battery? Spare, to replace a faulty one? larger capacity?

As a straight swap Anker are pretty decent

I've also heard pretty good things about Anker (although with two Samsung batteries (don't ask and I won't hve to make up a story), I don't need to buy another one.

I went for the triple sized ZeroLemon for my Note 3 and I love it. I only have to charge it once every 2-4 days, depending on how much I use it. I am always checking email and messages all day long, normally.

Cant beat ZeroLemon 10,000Mah battery. If you dont mind having a fat phone, go with this. Ive had it for about 2 months now. Its never run out on me. Charge it every 3 days. I use it heavily. Disable what you dont NEED and this battery will be extremely reliable. on 2 occasions i was at 2%, ive never seen lower, that 2% lasted me like 30min, just enough time to get to a charger.

I got my spare battery and S Pen when someone left their Note 3 on the back of their car. It flew off at a stoplight. The screen was super busted, but the S Pen and Battery were flawless so I took them and left the rest on the side of the road.

I use my S Pen a colossal ton more now, cause I don't have to worry too much about losing it (I think that possibility causes some people to not use it so much - they don't want to end up losing it and then feeling like they need to replace it).

Also noticed the bigger S Pens for the Note Tablets work flawlessly with the Note 3, so I might get one. The slightly longer and wider S Pen those tablets use seem a bit more comfortable to hold.
