Need help with mobile hot spot

Sorry if this has been discussed to death but I searched and couldn't find the answers. I finally got my ATT Captivate upgraded to 2.2(from ATT, not rooted) and would like to know about turning it into a wifi hot spot.

How do I do this and is there a way to do it for free or does ATT have it locked down where you have no choice but to pay?

Nope, it's just stock with 2.2. That's exactly what I didn't want to hear. So my only option with a stock phone is to pay and there is no way around it? What is the pricing like if so? I saw $45 for a Data Pro Plan that includes tethering, but is that the only option?

BTW, I thought I read somewhere a few weeks ago that ATT was cracking down on wifi tethering with rooted phones and everyone would start to see requests to stop of get hit with fees. Is this true or is there still a way around it? I guess I would have to go ahead and root if there is still a way to do it without the being force into fees.

I think the pricing is $45/mo but they throw in an extra 2GB? There was a lot of talk in the last month or so of ATT cracking down on tethering without paying the subscription. I think the conclusion was that nobody really knows. Anyway once the device is rooted it's pretty easy to enable the Mobile AP-XDA has some threads on how. Funny thing is once I did, I rarely use it anyway. The reliability and availability of wifi pretty much makes tethering a rare occurrence IMO

The data plan ins $45 for 4 gigs of use. This is between the phone and the tethering. So if you use 3gigs tethering you only get 1 gig to use on the phone. but it is only the $10 for each additional gig.
