Need help with modifying this phone...

So here is my dilemma, I am using Hero on Sprint and I want to start really modifying this phone as I have done with all my past ones. I read these forums trying to absorb who has done what with the various apps, roms, and other software that can enhance this phone but am not sure what effort to put forth right now. Should I start to go crazy with apps and looking at using a different ROM or just wait for this new update?

I am in school and haven't had the kind of dedicated "nerd" time I would normally put toward this type of thing so please forgive the obvious ignorance permeating throughout this message.

Wait for updates... the Hero could be very confusing once you first have it. Try to take in a little at a time, work with the apps you already have and learn the basics of the phone, then go into the market and start window shopping, from there you should be ok to go a little deeper with comfort. But definitely wait for updates for now.

Waiting on Update buddy! We are almost there. Hold on.
 
If you are asking for help before you have done anything, and dont have the time to really invest to learn what you are doing, I would highly recommend to use the phone as is and wait for the update.
 
i dont think the update is coming as soon as everyone thinks it is...my phone is rooted with fresh 1.1 rom on it and it is speedy and good on battery.
 
Even if it is 6 months it is really not a big deal for me. I am happy with the phone and have no need to root or run custom roms
