Root Need help with my HTC One m8

Ah0x

Newbie
I tried to root it a few months ago but, I didn't finish. I got to the point of unlocking the bootloader and stopped. So I tried to undo what I did, and it didn't work. The main problems that I see is that when my phone tries to update, it wont complete the update, it also wont soft or hard reset, and it wont fully power off. Is there any way that this can be fixed?

Probably can be fixed very easily.

Two and half questions -

When you boot into your bootloader (volume down while powering on) what does it say at the top of screen, up to and including the OS and date?

You're in the US, so is it a carrier-branded phone and if so, which carrier?

I have it with AT&T

Backup everything you can - try Helium Backup or Super Backup.

Backup everything you want from internal storage.

The fix (official HTC RUU) will erase everything but the physical sd card - and update the entire phone to with the latest AT&T factory image.

Scroll down to the manual update instructions, the download link is at the very end.

Despite what they say, get a good 50% charge or better.

Plug your phone into your pc, kill HTC Sync if it launches, double click the RUU file in Windows Explorer, follow the on screen instructions.

Do not turn off your phone, unplug it or anything else outside the instructions until it's finished. It can take upwards of a half hour.

The RUU link is good *only* for the M8 branded by AT&T.

Best luck!

I keep getting this connection error. "ERROR [170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR". I dont see the problem because my computer is recognizing my phone connected.

Hold volume down while powering on, navigate to FASTBOOT if necessary - while plugged in to the pc, does it say FASTBOOT USB?

when i turned it off and plugged it in, it automatically went to fastboot mode, it says in red "FASTBOOT AC"

OK, so something isn't ok with that connection even though your pc could see it.

Things to try -

Install HTC Sync if you haven't already but don't try to run it during the RUU.

Make sure that you're on a USB 2 port - even though USB 3 ports are supposed to be backwards compatible, they aren't always.

And the number one cause for that issue - a bad or intermittent USB cable.

Its recognized by the sync manager, even though I used the apps you recommended to back up my phone, I also did it with the sync manager. Also, to my knowledge, the ports on my laptop seem to be 2.0, they look grey so i assume that they are 2.0's.

OK, I've seen the same weird symptoms one other time recently, I'll have to search and see what resolved it.

Windows 7 or 8?

OK, the other guy with the same FASTBOOT AC problem couldn't get out of it until he flashed an uncorrupted rom. That cleared the problem and he was able to use the RUU.

However - he was unlocked whereas you're not.

Big difference.

What happens if you go into HBOOT and from there into recovery?

Do you still have stock recovery, or is something else there, like TWRP?

When I go to HBOOT, some words scroll saying things like no image, and some say no image or wrong image. when I choose recovery, it goes back to fastboot mode.

HBOOT is checking for an update image or service diagnostic file on your SD card, so what you saw on that is normal.

That you bounced out of RECOVERY instead of entering it is not ok.

I'm going to think about this one - I'll be back as soon as I have something.

any tips on how to get the sd card out, i dont have the tool that came with the phone to get it out with.

nvm i found a thread needle, the only thing small enough to fit the hole

It says "FASTBOOT USB" now. what should I do from here?

Go ahead and run the RUU. You want to have a good charge before starting.

I don't recall, you may need to boot into normal mode first but I don't think so.

You've had a series of failures, some of which are tied to a corrupted sd card.

After the RUU completes, and you're up and running normally, insert the sd card, copy all you can from it to your pc - unless you have an sd card reader and can do it that way.

Reformat the sd card on the phone when you're done (remember - successful RUU must come first).

After that's all said and done, ensure that the sd card is what it says it is by using "SD Insight"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.humanlogic.sdi

If the card is still corrupted or showing signs of being counterfeit, don't try to reuse it.

Once the RUU completes and you have the bad sd card out of the way, restore your backups.

Your phone will function normally and update properly moving forward.

The RUU is the ROM Update Utility.

It's used to do a manual update for those who can't otherwise and is used as a service tool to make sure that the phone is properly restored to working order from the bootloader on up - in your case, both.

So yes, confirm if the RUU asks that you want to perform any updates.

It says on the RUU its 10 mins, but itx been well over 10, its 2 am where I am. I don't want to wait for this to finish yet I dont want something to happen if/when im asleep.

What does your computer screen show and what does the phone show?

If the phone has a sort of silver screen with HTC in it you don't want to interrupt it.
