Root Need help with returning to stock (issues caused by latest OTA)

I bought a brand new Incredible 2 off of eBay and got it in the mail yesterday. I set it up and everything, no issues. It ran fine all day. Last night I ran the new OTA, which stopped half way through and gave me an Android guy with a triangle and exclamation point in the middle. I had to pull my battery to restart. After doing so, the phone would boot up but as soon as it did it would keep restarting itself.

I went in through HBOOT and restored what I had previously saved.

During this time I had some issues with service. I thought the OTA killed my radio (stupid me just didn't put the back case back on, which is the antenna for the device).

While I thought this was the issue I figured I could try to root and flash a new radio to see if it would fix it.

I tried these steps:

http://androidforums.com/incredible...ade-2-3-4-gingerbread-2-3-3-prepare-root.html

I also tried doing the "tacoroot" method since the new OTA made it nearly impossible to root. None of this was successful. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that you needed an app called Superuser until today. I had CLKWRK Mod but that's all. I'm new to rooting so it's unfortunate when important info is left out for us noobs.

Anyway, I tried calling Verizon and HTC a million times to try and fix my service issue. HTC sent me to PCD for Verizon (they flash phones). I was asked for the Software number (currently 5.10.605.9) which I was told is the WRONG software for the phone which is why my update could not be working now. I figure that when I tried to downgrade and root it was only partially successful and caused this to happen. In HBOOT I am also now ***UNLOCKED***.

Is there ANY way for me to get back to 100% stock how it was before this OTA messed up my phone? I will consider rooting in the future when someone finds a more stable route after this stupid OTA. I might just wait for ICS IF and when it comes out. If it sucks, I'll surely root. I just prefer the stock feel (I don't mind Cyanogenmod for my INC1, though!).

I hope someone is able follow what I'm saying and could help me get my phone back to 100% stock with the correct stock software. I don't think I'll be touching this OTA ever again. What a mess. If you haven't updated it, seriously, don't.

NOTE: I don't know if it makes a difference but I am still S-ON. It just says ***UNLOCKED*** at the top in HBOOT. That's about all. Still running 2.3.4 and everything else seems stock.

Thank you!

The only reason I would want to change it is if it's incorrect. The PDC guy said the software number was wrong. However, if that number is correct could somebody verify? Maybe the PDC guy thought that was supposed to be the number after the latest OTA update. Since the new OTA update won't work on my phone that would make him wrong.

Also, was Dec the last major update? Thanks!

The December update was 5.10.605.9. The June update that bricks a few phones but adds screenshots is 6.01.605.05 710RD. Your phone may be hTCdev unlocked.

Any idea why the update won't work on my phone at all? I would like to take screen shots. Is there a manual update for HBOOT? Damn Verizon.

The OTA just tried to update while I was in the shower. I was literally charging it so I could set up a new back up... The odds.... Damn... Ill try one of those links. If they dont work ill root and flash a new rom.

EDIT: The second download link doesn't work. When I load it through the HBOOT it loads up then has a quick error message and goes away. Just wonderful. Is there ANY way from blocking this stupid Verizon OTA from automatically trying to update while I'm sleeping or doing something? I use my phone as my alarm. That would be a disaster if it tried to update and failed in the middle of the night.

If that requiresa root I still can't root my phone. I'll try again this weekend. If not, how can i? I hope my noobness is entertainment enough for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Alright,

so I tried following the following:

[Tool] Downgrade VivoW with hboot 0.98 - xda-developers

Everything worked fine up until near the end. It says "remote: 99 unknown fail". (SEE 1ST IMAGE)
*NOTE, ERASING CACHE WILL WORK. JUST DIDN'T THIS TIME. I'VE TRIED THIS SUCCESSFULLY UP UNTIL THE REMOTE 99 FAIL*

I also tried this: How to Downgrade 2.3.4 - HTC Droid Incredible 2 - YouTube

It's still 2.3.4, Sense 2.1.

My phone is Unlocked but still S-ON. I can't get rid of S-ON no matter what I try and do.

See 2nd image for what my HBOOT looks like.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong and what steps I need to follow at this point?

Also, can I flash CM9 and delete bloatware even with S-ON?

Thanks!

I used the HTCDev tool to unlock again. At that point I was able to flash an .img of clockwork mod recovery.

When I re-locked I could no longer access Recovery. It said ***SECURITY WARNING*** and would not enter it.

I unlocked the phone again and can now use Recovery. I will stay like this I suppose.

Am I not allowed to use Recovery with a locked phone?

Also, if I leave my phone unlocked, IF and WHEN there might be an ICS OTA for the Inc 2, can I still download and install while being unlocked?

Thanks!

I've never used a stock phone. Maybe if you are locked custom recoveries won't run. I'm assuming that the term "custom recovery" implies that there is a stock recovery. I could be wrong.

If the ICS OTA ever comes out it will probably try to install on your phone. I don't think that would be a good thing.

Here is how I fixed it: I suggest all others with my issue try this...

Flash the boot.img from this rom: [ROM] 6.01.605.05 Stock OTA ROM (6/27/2012) - xda-developers (full)

THEN went into recovery > factory reset > clear cache > wipe dalvik > install zip from SD > install

If you need addition details, how to flash, etc. they can be found here ([DOWNGRADE] How To Downgrade 6.01.605.05 and gain S-Off - Page 5 - xda-developers I was also given help.
I'm user "telecastertunes" on there.

Good luck!
