3. Unlock your bootloader at htcdev.com
The next step is to head over to htcdev.com and follow the procedure there to unlock your bootloader. This is the step that can void your warranty!

3A. Getting started
Create an account at htcdev.com and login. After clicking the "unlock bootloader" icon and "Get Started" button, select your phone from the list (HTC Wildfire S *, right?). The asterisk (*) means that your phone requires an HBOOT update (step 3B below). Finally, click the "Begin Unlock Bootloader" button. Fill out all the nasty forms telling HTC that it's perfectly fine with you to void your warranty by doing this process.

3B. Updating your HBOOT Read the "Bootloader instructions" page carefully. Then choose the correct RUU for your phone's carrier and model number (ie, PG76xxx00). The model number for your phone is found under the battery minus the final two 0s. If you've successfully upgraded to the European 2.3.5 RUU in step 1 above, the corresponding HBOOT update (HTC EU) should work for your phone. It's the one I used for my Asia A510e/PG76100. Re-read the instructions and then follow them.

You'll find it on the officila HTC site.
HTC Wildfire S Product Support ? HTC Help Center

If your computer can't see your phone, it might be that you need to download the HTC driver. I accidently uninstalled it the other day and my laptop couldn't see it anymore so re intalled it.
I don't remember where I got it from anymore but I'm sure if you google it, you will find it.

i see the driver in my computer... i just think the phone is a pos lol thanks for the help tho

i am saying her phone not the device itself. i know a lot of people who have an htc, hers has had problems from day one.. but if my computer recognizes the device and the sync dose not, can i still root this device?
Speak for your own phone. I think my WFS is a great device :)

i wejhnt to htc dev and attemped to to the bootlog unlock and the rru says an error has happened. rom cant update.. please help cafe. u got gtalk? dose the phone need to be on the sync or disk drive?

As I said before, you don't even want Sync running so it's unimportant that it doesn't recognize the phone. What is important is that the drivers work and you have SDK tools installed correctly.

When unlocking the bootloader first came up, there weren't that many different versions available and some of them were giving problems. And apparently some have tried different ones (as lond as the serial number was the same) and it seemed to have worked. I haven't tried it though so I can't guarantee you that it works.
I think CafeKampuchia can help you better on that. I had read on his(her?) thread comments that some people have tried it (Unless it was a completely different site altogether. In that case I don't remember where I saw that)

ya i am waiting on a response. i seen a nother sight that had a rru for the wild fire and they had a forum and i went to check out some of the post and the noone posted so i didnt do it.... it sucks because i have rooted like 6 phones and i get stuck and every step due to the crazyness of her device..... i cant wait till i can obtain root acess
