Root Need some advice

Tomorrow I have a replacement DInc coming. I am going to root but I need some advice. If the phone is on 2.1 does it really matter if I update to 2.2 before I root? If I end up installing a custom Rom, do they include a custom radio?

it should be on 2.2

and ROMs dont incluse radios
