Root Need some advice

got a desire last night which was unlocked and rooted, got home and was getting an error about com.android.mms has stopped working so did a factory reset, not solved the problem but now have another one.....will the factory reset have unrooted my phone as cant work out how to install apps to my sd card, downloaded ES file explorer which does let me explore my phone but shows half directories as empty. Any help will be very appreciated
 
Factory reset won't remove root, providing the rom was rooted correctly.

Your best bet is looking around the rooting forum, finding a rom you like the sound of and flashing it onto the phone.

Presumably you have some sort of custom recovery like clockworkmod flashed?

Do you have any history of the device?
 
Got no history about the phone mate other than it was on orange and the person i got it off got the offical unlock code from htc to unlock it to all networks.

what is the different between the types of roms?? this is the first htc i have had was using an iphone up until yesterday but thought the desire looks like a better phone.

what are the risks with flashing the rom??
 
the risk is that it may not flash properly then you have no rom. However, there is almost always a way to recovery.

The first thing we need to know is what recovery you have?

Turn off the phone, hold vol down and turn it on. Use vol to navigate to recovery option and press power to select.

If you get a black screen with a triangle, press Vol up + power. What screen do you get? Hopefully its clockworkmod recovery. Black screen, green text
 
Well you could either:

1) Download rom manager and "flash" clockworkmod recovery that way. You can then use it to install rooted custom roms (or even ones that are close to stock, but still rooted)

or

2) Download a generic RUU to your PC and run it. This will take your phone to an unbranded, unrooted state but you may need a goldcard to do this (not sure)

To be honest, I would probably get as close to stock as possible with a rooted rom, install through rom manager (doing a wipe) and see how that goes.
 
I would recommend either Teppic's rooted Stock ROM which is here:

or Leedroid 2.1a which is here:

[FroYo Sense] LeeDrOiD V2.1a (23/09 l Official 2.2 l FAST l STABLE l MULTILINGUAL) - xda-developers

Both are stock Sense ROMS. Teppic's is pretty close to the stock one but can add A2SD+ so all apps and cache will be on your SD card. The Leedroid one is still a sense ROM but with a little more added.

I've tried both but am currently with LeeDroid. Find it perfect and have modded it to within an inch of its life with new stuff so can make it really personal.

Leedroid is sense based, but its still custom. Its not stock.

Teppic's is Stock + Root, so yeah pretty much stock.

I'd probably go with Teppic's to be honest. Get a good feel of Froyo before you do anything else.
 
also can i flash using a mac?? and would it relock my phone back to orange as cant find that code that the bloke i got it off unlocked it with
 
The RUU's for returning to stock (unrooted HTC version) are .exe, but there are ways of doing it without windows.

As for custom roms, you flash from your SD card. You put the rom on SD and install via rom manager.

If you have a rooted rom though, you can't update it with Over The Air updates (sometimes you can but it is a big NO NO!) - but the developers often release updated custom roms that you can flash over your existing version to get the updates.

Personally, I prefer the custom roms but its up to you really.
 
i dont mind a custom rom just wanna see if there is much difference between 2.2 and 2.1
is it likely to lock my handset tho?? and is there a step by step how to flash in english lol
 
It shouldn't lock your handset, as its already running a custom rom, but you never know with Orange.

Maybe try flashing it without your sim in and with a goldcard just to be safe.

Do this first:

It makes your sd card into a gold card. Backup you contents first.



Then, download rom manager from market and install.

Download the rom linked earlier and below:

[ROM] [30/09] Pre-rooted Stock Froyo (2.10.405.2) [Optional mods] - xda-developers

Put it on your SD card, somewhere you can find it.

In Rom manager choose the "Flash clockworkmod recovery" option.

Also, download titanium backup, go to backups and select batch from menu

Now you are prepared.

To actually flash, open rom manager, choose "Install Rom from SD card", select your zip file and tick the wipe box.

Then just let it do its stuff.

Later on, if you need you can restore some of the stuff lost via titanium.
 
just gone to download the custom rom but its no longer there....anyone know of another custom rom with froyo and built in root please

what is the best rom package to go for, the all in one rom or the seperate rom and radio, i do want the update apps in the second rom but dont know how to install both parts.

sorry for all the questions just ive never done this before and want to make sure i know what im doing first
 
Well once you have the rom flashed, install rom manager again and make sure the recovery is there.

Download the add ons and again, put them on your sd card.

In rom manager, choose reboot into recovery.

Navigate the menu to find "install zip from sd card" Choose the zip and it will flash it.

Repeat this process for each add on.
